TOWNHOUSE AND CARRIAGE HOUSE
RARE OPPORTUNITY:TOWNHOUSE & CARRIAGE HOUSE
Historic four story Federal style townhouse and separate two story carriage house, with a private garden between the two houses. This 25 ft. wide property is superbly located in the West Village and has been lovingly maintained by the same family for more than four decades.

TOWNHOUSE:
Built in 1834, the main house is a charming example of early 19th century architecture, with a restored brick facade, handsome wrought iron railings, and a graceful doorway flanked by slender Ionic columns. The interior has many original details, including wide plank hardwood floors, decorative wood moldings, and five fireplaces. There are two parlors and a study on the main floor, four bedrooms on the upper floors, three full baths, and a dining room, kitchen, and laundry room in the English basement. The house has a large amount of storage space, including many closets and an attic. The tranquil green garden has bluestone paving and is shaded by trees.

CARRIAGE HOUSE:
Built in 1889, this romantic small house is hidden from the street, with a private entrance through a horse walk (a passage at the side of the house) and an attractive brick facade. The interior has an open plan design on the first floor, with a light-filled kitchen and a soaring ceiling with exposed beams in the spacious living room and dining area. A mahogany staircase leads to two bedrooms, bath, and walk-in closet upstairs. The photographer Diane Arbus lived here during the 1960s.

131 Charles Street was designated as an individual New York City landmark in 1966 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The property has been featured in many publications, including Bricks and Brownstone by Charles Lockwood, The Houses of Greenwich Village by Kevin D. Murphy, Classic New York by Ada Louise Huxtable, the A. I. A. Guide, and the New York Times.
