With many of its 1903 features still intact, this historic Artist’s studio has great potential that a visionary owner with a passion for history and architectural sleuthing will enjoy making reality. There are original floors to be restored, original oak doors, moldings, door frames and beams to be stripped of thick layers of paint. Sconces and ceiling light connections were clearly designed for gas lights, with gas pipes still in place, then converted to electricity in more modern times. Except for the foyer, all rooms have 11 foot 3 inches high, beamed ceilings. The large, dramatic living room with its tall studio windows facing North is testament to its original function as an artist studio. It also promises great space for entertaining after the theater or opera. Double closets in the corners were built in later for increased storage, as was an additional window facing West. Folding doors separate the living room from the kitchen. The windowed kitchen has open water & gas pipes and needs renovation, but there is enough room for a full set of modern appliances. The bathroom is small, and could be made more serviceable. But it has a lovely cast iron, claw foot bathtub in good condition. What was once a window from the bathroom into the bedroom is currently covered up. The bedroom is very quiet and has a West window. The ceiling in the foyer is lowered and has a trap door leading to an extensive storage loft above.
The Atelier was built in 1903 as the second of six grand and distinctive Artist Studio apartment buildings constructed between 1901 and 1929 which form the Artists Colony Historic District. These buildings have attracted many famous artists from the literary, dance, music, film, theatre, fashion and art worlds for over a century. Conceived and financed by artists, this is the only landmarked artists’ colony in Manhattan.
Today, the Atelier is an established full service Cooperative with a full time superintendent. It has an elegant lobby, and a magnificent, original, brass elevator operated by a 24-hour elevator/doorman. There are 34 apartments of which 14 are family size, and 20 are the smaller artists studios which all have wide, tall windows facing North.
Storage rooms can be rented subject to availability. Other amenities include a laundry room, bike storage and a beautifully landscaped common rooftop deck with panoramic city views. A closed circuit TV system is monitored in the doorman’s booth and the super’s office. A small monthly assessment to pay for completed Local Law 11 work is in effect until January 2015. It is the first such assessment in over 40 years.
