The existing yellow pine and oak structure was largely left freestanding in order that its strength and texture could be appreciated. The design guides movement under beams and around columns and up towards the vertical spaces of the skylights, weaving though the structure and touching the exterior enclosure. This movement is punctuated by moments when surface textures reveal themselves or the ceilings lift up towards skylights, bulkheads and clerestories. A folding aluminum ships ladder gives access to the private roof deck via a glass-floored landing. The space has been built out with two bedroom and two baths but a generous loft feeling is preserved with open kitchen, living and dining.
