Discussion about
Just curious, during a pregnancy, where would the best location be to live in Manhattan? For example, doctor visits, prenatal classes etc? Which hospital is considered is considered one of the better ones to live close by? Things to look for: - ease of getting a cab - quiet location for better sleep - close to hospital etc etc
E 72nd is near cornell, quiet and it is easy to get a cab. Some would even say it is like the suburbs - cul de sac lol.
almost every part of Manhattan is close to a hospital.
There are several good hospitals--best to check with your doctor on what he/she recommends. NY Presby is very a good teaching hospital--it's over on York and 70th (I wouldn't recommend actually living all the way over there, though). Roosevelt Hosp also has very good maternity services (10th Ave and 59th st). But really, there's no need to live right next door to a hospital--hailing a cab in most areas of Manhattan is quite easy (provided it's not rush-hour, or the 4pm shift change).
Remember, there's no real 'doctor's row' in Manhattan (except perhaps Park Ave)--good ones can be found anywhere. There are some good OB/GYNs on the UWS, but again, good docs can be found virtually anywhere.
As for quiet, the least noisy apartments tend to be on higher floors facing the building's inner courtyard (though don't expect a lot of light, and there won't be a view). I happen to like the UWS in general because public transportation is easily reached from virtually anywhere. Another great hub of public transportation is the middle Village (9th street through 14th bet. 7th and University, roughly), where you can easily walk to east-side AND west-side trains. Plus, St. Vincent's hospital is right there in case of emergency.
Something to consider if you're pregnant and planning to buy for the long-term is public school zones. If you do a search on this board you'll find a few discussions on those. Also there was an interesting article in last Sunday's Times on PS zones and real estate.
no real estate agent can answer your question because it's "steering," but isn't this an urbanbaby.com question anyway?

^^NY Presby being the same as Cornell, which gcondo mentions in his post
Upper East.
Its not just the hospitals, but many of the top baby docs are just up there (I know someone who just went through the process).
Its tough to fight critical mass....
Also, lots of quiet nooks on UES...
> Remember, there's no real 'doctor's row' in Manhattan
But there is a hospital row... and baby docs do much of their work near hospitals, and end up having offices nearby.
For hospitals (and thus associate docs) I would recommend Cornell (UES) or Columbia Presb (UWS). I believe both have class 4 neonatal care centers which is what you want if there's an emergency. I'm not sure about the other hospitals so I can't make comments either way.
if you want to try to avoid an overly medicalized birth (Manhattan has some of the top intervention rates in the country), St Luke's Roosevelt's Birthing center is great. Lots of prental yoga on the UWS too. And it's a great neighborhood post-pregnancy, although as someone pointed out, the most important thing is to be thoughtful about school zones/options. 5 years goes by really fast.

Its all NY Prebyterian now. And, what *was* Columbia P is at 168th. We calling that the UWS? Thats Washington Heights in my book... which is not a place that fits any of the other criteria.
this whole question would be like asking where to live in manhattan for access to good restaurants.
Only if most of the zagat top 50 was on the upper east side...
(which might have only been true 20 years ago)
try to be near central park
there's a nice planned parenthood on bleeker near bowery
nonsense question
My apartment seems to be a pretty good place to get pregnant.
Have to agree with: columbiacounty "this whole question would be like asking where to live in manhattan for access to good restaurants."
JuiceMan - what about the back seat of your Chevy?
93rd, the back seat of my Chevy was just a place to practice. I don't think I ever succeeded there but not entirely sure.
there are many places where a giant wobbling woman (especially one who is new in town) would feel uncomfortable.
