Discussion about
Did anyone else get this $0 initiation fee? WTF? I pay $2K and now you are treating "new" members better than your old ones? It's like a magazine subs, new members get $1 and issue, old members keep paying $2 issue... .seriously, makes me want to urinate in the shower!

HAHAHA! You are pretty harsh on people who bought in 2007-8. So maybe you weren't smart, when you signed on for $2K back then...

b/c a lot of the buildings in 67th street tout "Reebok" as a gym... if you didn't know better you'd think 111 w67th, 1965bway, 101, and Phillips club all came w/ Reebok club memberships!

look if you want to have an "adult" NYCer lifestyle here are the things you need:
1) An apartment where each of your kid has a bedroom (not a flex 1, or 2, 3 or 4)
2) Garage near apt (assumes you will have car - semi luxurious i.e. a RR, MB, BMW;
3) kids in great public school or private school;
4) Vacations to exotic places, min 2x yr;
5) nanny/live-in (who speaks a foreign language so your kids can have the benefit of learning Russian, Chinese, Spanish);
6) and for me at least a family membership to Reebok!

uppereast, yes 3 yrs ago I let go of my NYSC membership and sucked it up for the Reebok bc of the pool. On the other hand I was not making that $12,641/month mortgage ($2MM, 30yr, 6.5%) plus CC/T of $2.5K, over that 3 yr period plus the $700K, capital depreciation on the GM unit that I bid on... so let's call it even :)
6)

I am with uppereast. New renters and buyers are getting much better deals than people who bought or rented one or two years ago. For the same reason, SCLA, Reebok, and Chelsea Piers are offering ABSURD deals. Even on top of corporate discounts (ie free months.) And I am sure all of the buildings you list - 111 w67th, 1965bway, 101, and Phillips club are cheaper to live in for new residents than they were in 2007.

West67, I am hoping to join the Manhattan Owners Club this year, at 1/2 price membership...well, maybe I'll wait for the auctions and get it for less. It might take some extra workout and a lot of patience. My neighbor next door will be the one that didn't cut the price at the right time, and it's stuck with a mortgage that doubles the amount I paid. The cards are being shuffled and changing hands. It is painful and though i am happy to be a member of the club again, I am not oblivious at people's suffering, we all make mistakes.

w67th, I joined 2.5 years ago and paid 25% of what you did for initiation. That said, I can't get them to stop raising my damn monthlies. Great gym but huge change in attitude once the hedge fund weenies started cost cutting. Who was the brilliant 22 year old analyst that made the towels smaller?

I would like my "adult" lifestyle to consist of:
1) kids have an actual bedroom (yes, we're now talking more than one!)
2) minivan to fit them all in
3) children are literate
4) vacations by myself (anywhere will do at this point)
5) again, just hoping they conquer english
6) a nice pair of Reeboks to run, as far, and as fast as I can ;)

is that why I can't cover myself with the towels? I thought i was getting fat.

uppereast... you know I am just having a good time on SE :), I take this as seriously as an anonymous RE board....

UWSMOM, CONGRATS! knock em out I say... pack them in tightly, it's hell but there is that wonderful moment when they start playing with each other... and then it's like TOTALLY cool/easy!

There goes all your RE math... I do not envy your late nite discussions w/ hubby coming up....

p09, I like it when I'm called a "lad." :)

I go to synergy and sweat with the cheapies for $45/month. Prior to that I went to the Asser Levy rec center, $75 a year and an indoor and outdoor pool with SUPERRB weights (and I didn't even mind that a fair number of the weights users had clearly been sent up the river once or twice) but the bitches waiting for the 20 minute limit on the aerobic machines sent me to more the more expensive option.

I've belonged to the more expensive clubs. Luckily none are close to where I now live, and it doesn't matter as I sweat by myself, not with a trainer. And the pool is still across the street.

uwsmom, #4 is sublime. draw a picture of yourself in a happy, ideal state and i'd bet the only other person in the picture might be someone handing over the drink with the pink umbrella. motherhood is tough, more so than I thought, certainly.
