Atlanta condo auction: Williamsburg's future?

Condo auctions are popping up in Atlanta. The newest one is in a highly desirable area (mid-town Atlanta) with initially priced condos at 329K-769K for 1000-1800 sq ft and now going to auction with minimum bid prices 179K-299K. What's the chance of these types of auctions occuring in NYC (specifically Williamsburg)? It seems rental conversion is the option of choice in NYC. Anything intrinsic in NYC that discourages these type of auctions?

They have already happened in NYC, especially in the boroughs but even in Manhattan - just Google the term.
