Discussion about
I'm installing a PTAC unit and my choices are Simon Aire or Island Aire - can anyone recommend one over the other? According to the super, my building can only accommodate certain units, but I wonder if there are other options. Thoughts? thx!
You are likely to be limited to what building has been using historically. So just ask the super and managing agent about choices. I assume it gets tied to building heat.
What are the dimensions of the sleeve opening? That will determine what make/model units can fit.
Based on the brands you’ve mentioned, my guess is you have a Fedders A sleeve which is 27” wide. You can go with retrofit models made by any number of fly-by-night PTAC companies. You can replace with a Freidrich Wallmaster AC or heat pump as perfect fit. Thirdly, you could install a smaller (dimensionally) wall AC and baffle/insulate the annular area between the new unit’s sleeve and the existing sleeve.
Int, Many PTAC in Manhattan have hydronic heat which connects to building hot water pipe. So your choices may be limited. Personally, I have found Simon Aire to be pretty good and reasonably priced.
You are right about the heat, 300. I, too, used to have a Simone-Aire unit but unlike your experience, I found it to be garbage. Never cooled well and would cycle off for absolutely no reason. I was never comfortable until I ripped the whole thing out (literally) and replaced with a Wallmaster. I later had the steam coil routed elsewhere to a new radiator.
