hate to OT post .... but We recently moved from a NY 30th floor high rise to brooklyn brownstone .... am now realising insect screens are essential that low to the ground. Any suggestions? wow, slept with the windows open for the firs time last night....welcome to brooklyn mosquitos - feel like i visited the blood bank. I've been googling this morning for insect screens and looking for any and all advice. We are on the 4th floor so have a rear deck with walk through casement 'windows' 38w X 53h. On the front we have metal casements 40w X 36h Am thinking about going for retractable screens (the ones that roll up like a blind). Any thoughts or experiences? If we did go for the fixed style how the heck do you get them to mount to the front metal casement windows? Any vendors people want to recommend or hardware solutions to stay away from. tia, Dean [less]
I don't know who to recommend but I have a few thoughts. Why not put a screen door on that rear window to the deck? That opening is essentially a door rather than a window. As for the front windows, I guess your windows open out or you'd probably be best with a fixed screen/storm window combo mounted outside the window. I don't imagine it's a do it yourself unless you're very handy. What do your neighbors have? If you have a neighborhood hardware store, I'd start there since I like to support small businesses & keep the money in the 'hood.

We had a similar problem. Tried a hanging screen that fits in the doorway with a tension rod at the top, but it's not mosquito tight. I finally ordered a roll of fiberglass screen from home depot, cut to size (50 x 70 ins), and fixed it to the metal casement with velcro. Not the prettiest, but we can take them out when we need to and so far it's fitting well. The screen doesn't stick so well to the velco but stapling them helps. Good luck!
I wouldn't recommend the roll-up kind. They really don't do much good since they're not tight (skeeters are wiley creatures and will find a way in even if it's through a tiny hole or gap). By the way, you're ALREADY getting skeeters? Those buggers don't waste any time, do they? I thought they wouldn't be out til June, earliest!
If you're in a rental, your landlord should provide screens for you. If not, it is possible to find adjustable frame screens that fit into your open window. You can get these at the hardware store. Casements can be tricky, though, and you may have to get something custom-made. The walk-thru windows may be fine with standard mounted screen doors, depending on the frames.
^^^ what I mean is, depending on the width of the doorway frames.
I would trust Artie's Hardware on 14th Street in Manhattan to solve this problem ..
