Brokerage agency wants me to sign a W-9... Legal?

Long story short, the landlord reneged on the lease and returned security deposit before signing. Broker cashed the commission check, now they (Corcoran) want me to sign a w-9 before they return my money. Is this necessary? Is it legal? Should I refuse?

of course -- you need to sign one to trace int income of your sec deposit
