Why does SE pull posts?

Is there rhyme or reason to the posts that get pulled? I just want to be clear on what I can and can't say, without the police yanking my posts. SE, please clarify for me

because they're mean?

no, i think they only respond to someone reporting abuse, and then they'll pull for fairly minor offenses. the only defense is merciless abuse for the person who reported abuse.

obviously one needs to report abuse if someone is hi-jacking the board. maybe for divulging certain personal information. otherwise, i don't see why we can't self police.
