Discussion about
Saw a place today at 296 West 10th Street that was nice but big issue is that across the street is an unused warehouse that is meant to convert to condos but has been stalled. Concern is that when this is built it will be noisy. However, agent says that they are builing the condos within the existing building structure, plus adding 4 floors. How long do you think a building condo conversion would take and, given that it is not full construction, how noisy do you think it would be? Would be grateful for thoughts from SE insiders. Thanks!

That is one huge lot across the street, running all the way through to Charles. Seems as if it'd carry more than what's there plus four floors. Any development in Manhattan triggers lots of community blah blah blah, so you can probably dig around and find out what's going on.

Anyway, actual construction goes pretty quickly, given how much delay costs the developer. Not all that noisy, except for cement trucks, and all the white noise from the West Side Highway half a block away might mask that.

Thanks NWT, very helpful. Have researched it, it is a condo development called 150 Charles and it sounds like it will be more than the four new floors, as you have said. Sounds enormous and probably turns me of 296 West 10th to be honest.

"How long do you think a building condo conversion would take"

Under current market conditions? 10 years?
