Discussion about
OK. I have a slacker offspring aged 22 and I want to buy a condo uptown for him. The cheapest there is!!!!! Just something for a young guy who feels privileged and perhaps is a bit lazy. So. What should I buy? I'm boomer and he's........ never going to get a job anyway.

Don't forget to buy him a kitten too so he can feel responsible and has a purpose in life!

poorishlady is not a new poster.

poorishlady, think slacker-big: buy him a small apartment building and make him "work" as the superintendent. Put it in your name, and leave all your money to charity in your surprise secret will.

I don't know why I am supporting this...but here goes:

http://www.streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/416120-condo-443-w-151st-st-hamilton-heights-new-york

I like alanhart's idea. A friend's family did something similiiar to that- they owned a small apartment building. The youngest son was a slacker (although has finally gotten his act together) and lived in one of the apartments for the cost of helping out in the family business from time to time as well as making sure that the building was being taken care of properly by the super.

PL, I am actually troubled by your post because it sounds like you are a big part of the problem here. If your son is on his way to being a bum, you need to prod him not coddle & support him. I think of a friend's nephew who'd been to jail & had a gambling habit & possibly a problem with drugs & alcohol; at one time he was living in grandma's garage & mom & grandma were giving him money for cigarettes & beer. Only you know if you're an enabler but from the sound of your post, you are.

I think of a family friend who's a psychiatrist specializing in substance abuse. All of his patients, not using health insurance so as to better protect their privacy, are top NYC executives, bankers, lawyers, etc. They should've become slackers instead. Maybe they weren't coddled and supported enough when they were 22.

Is this a joke post? If not, why would you buy a slacker son an apartment in NYC? What's he gonna DO here? Do you or he have any idea how expensive it is to live in this city? Not exactly the place for slackers, unless he has unlimited funds or wants to sit on the corner with a tin cup (and the tin cup scenario won't work if he's got a mortgage to pay).

Why not tell him he can start by looking for a JOB here, and once he FINDS one he can rent until he's certain this is where he wants to live.

poorishlady is attempting to incite some sort of anti-rich parents flame war. Wrong crowd douche.

Squid, I believe poorishlady lives here. NYC happens to be an excellent place for slackers. You don't need the expense of a car, there are a ton of free things to do, and you can even get out of the city using mass transit.

This very probably is a joke post, but in fact 1OneWon there was recently on StreetEasy exactly the flame thread that you described (inspired by a NYT article on parents no longer paying for all or much of their adult kids' Wmsbgh apartments) ... so it's very much the right crowd.

Alan, you're probably right. And she's just trying to get his lazy ass out from underfoot. My advice would be to find him a nice rental share on CraigsList.

AH, I have a psychiatrist friend, manhattan, specialty is mood disorders (anxiety, depression). Says that 80% of her clients are lawyers. the sweet smell of success, and some paxil.

If you are depressed on paxil, should you be making real estate decisions?

Paxil is hard to get off. Took me at least 5 yrs and many failed attempts. Hey, the op is just a concerned parent of a slacker college - grad student. It's an investment, no? And everyone has to live somewhere.

If you have one child then take Paxil, are you allowed to have a second child or would the child get it?

Why uptown? I recommend Bushwick, capital of misunderstood creative types. You can get a 2br under 250k, so your son can get a roommate to pay for the monthly charges.

If he has no income, he should buy an HDFC co-op.

I recently used the non-word "poorish" to refer to pre-1970s CUNY students' families. So that clicked with greenberg's obsessive-compulsion.
