Discussion about
Thinking about buying in this neighborhood. What do people think about it if Manhattan is out of reach?
Definitely hang out there first. There is at least one fab trendy excellent restaurant, the Starbucks is open 24 hours. On-street parking is definitely available weekends as of last summer, when I performed at a wedding out on the water and spent the whole long day in the 'hood. Biggest drawback: constant traffic noise from bridges when you're in the park; the urban canyons block out some of the noise when you're deeper into the streets. If you move there, you will get used to it so you hardly hear it. However. Second biggest possible drawback: review the crime stats. It's a little too quiet at night for my taste. I'd want to know what the stats say.
Almost bought a 2BR in DUMBO in July 2006 for $995K. Put in an offer, but the broker dragged her feet for a week and we found a place on the UWS (100th and WEA) in the meantime. Btoth condos were the same price, but in DUMBO the apt. was 1300 vs. 1100 sq ft., was in a a much, much newer building with a gorgeous kitchen and 2 great bathrooms (and a much better view, ground floor in UWS vs. 6th florr in DUMBO). As long as you can deal with the noise level (being between two bridges is noisey), the wind factor, and fewer restaurants and stores, I think DUMBO is a good option. We have a small child and figured we needed more amenities and places to take the baby, so the UWS was a better option for us. Good luck.
O my, what would all my friends say if I moved to Brooklyn?
How are the views from Dumbo? Let's move & see what the friends say.
lots of new developments over there, should be much less quiet at night
Is WaSHINGton St a good location, all things considered. Im a woman in my 20s. Is it a suitable place to stay? Im looking to buy and there are some around the area
I too would be interested in people's opinions about DUMBO and surrounding area. My impression was that the prices had already appreciated and that it was a bit late to be buying in this area, that Greenpoint, for example, was a better buy.
Also - out of curiosity - why does everyone comment anonymously? As a newbie to streeteasy - is it somehow unwise or uncool to use your name?
