Discussion about
What's up with this place? I see their ads all the time on TV but no discussion on SE. Frankly the place looks horrid, like cheap apartments in the surburbs or a smaller city. I'm asking strictly out of curiousity. If for some reason I had to leave Manhattan I think I would head to the Bronx rather than Brooklyn. But I hope it never comes to that since I'm in my "carry me out" apartment.

I don't think the ads are talking directly to you.

It was built as Vanderveer Estates, a landlord-owned lower-middle income housing project, basically. Barbara Streisand lived in it, per this 5-year-old article from before it became Flatbush Gardens: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/01/13/nyregion/a-long-troubled-complex-hopes-to-flourish-again.html?pagewanted=all

It's convenient to Brooklyn College, I think, and to quite a few Manhattaphilic Brooklyn neighborhoods.

Thanks Alan...usually the buildings that make TV buys are new construction that is trying to look "upscale" and is priced to match (Edge, etc). Btw, the casting in the TV ads indicates that Flatbush Gardens is pursuing a different demographic than currently lives there according to the Times. However, if they are targeting "young hip and predominantly white" the look of the apartments certainly doesn't reflect it. Then again its been a while since I was young and hip so maybe I've forgotten "a deal is a deal ugly be damned".
