If the govt. was planning all along to have a rigged election with Ahmadnutajob the winner, why even bother having a debate?

Good questions Alpine. I suspect a few things
1) The candidates the four candidates were screened so the establishment must have viewed
them as acceptable
2) There are clearly differences, yet they are all conservatives. We're not talking
talking Socialists vs Conservatives
3) Iran is a comlex society, containing College educated Engineers, Doctors and the like.
To say there is one gov't might be an over-reach. There are probably factions in the
gov't and now we're seeing them react
4) I personally wonder if a segment of the population is reacting to some excesses of
the revolution. While not the same, there might be parallels to the French revolution.

Riversider, how many times did you see unarmed demonstrators being shot at, and you thought, it cannot be in vain; the revolution will make things right.
Russia: luminaries, recognized names being mauled by soldiers and police in full view of photojournalists. Consequences? NONE.
What's more, I can assure you that people in Iran outside of Tehran have no idea what's going on.
Like Russians have no idea what's going on unless they witness it.
That's how fascism and totaltarism work.

Listing one Republican who agreed with Obama is like saying the exception is the rule..
Lindsay Graham, John McCain,Richard Perle, chuck Grassley. More Republicans attacked Obama than supported him.

most Republicans are not going to support Obama because then that would look bad for them with their base. If Obama had come out more forcefully against Iran right away, they still would have attacked him. Any Republican who becomes too supportive of Obama's policies will find themselves facing a tough primary election. Just ask Arlen Spector.
