Discussion about
I live in the 20th police PCT on the UWS. Conversing with someone who lives uptown (110's) he commented that his area is quite safe. I didn't disagree, but I commented that in the 70's and 80's is a safer area. Hard to argue over this with little quantitative facts. Either way, the 20th PCT reported 2 murders YTD in its district ( http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/downloads/pdf/crime_statistics/cs020pct.pdf ). Can anyone recall any murders in the area? I would think a murder in the 20th PCT would attract the news (93rd St affair is in another district). FWIW he lives in the 26th PCT where there have been less murders. Thanks.
A body was dumped out of a car at 73rd and WEA several months ago. Don't know whether that counts.
Yes. There was a murder at the tobacco store on b"way between 71&72 this winter
Murder is not the bellwether crime -- if you want to know about crime in your area, look at robbery stats.
Scargo - totally agree. I am just curious, because homicide is the kind of thing you hear about...
NYC - all 5 boros - recently ranked 245 out of 261 cities with population greater than 100,000, and last out of 26 cities with population greater than 500,000 in violent crime reported. Being robbed at gunpoint counts toward that. I feel safer anywhere in NYC than I do anywhere outside NYC at any time of day or night. Having been here in the late 80's / early 90's and for the last 12 years, it is difficult to explain how different this city feels.
There were 13 murders last year committed on a stranger. This is a ridiculously low number.
Rent or own, I think we can all agree there is no better place to call home (even if Rufus won't differs).
I live just off of 71 street and there was no murder at that tobacco store but the owner was shot in the hip during a bungled robbery...not sure if that makes the situation better or worse...
