Discussion about
Hi, is Beekman a stuffy white glove kinda place? I'm comparing an apartment to buy there with one in Murry Hill/Kips Bay. Thots?

I'm in (long distance) love with the area so I'm curious about the feedback. Hope we get plenty!

WELL, I can see we're getting LOTS of feedback! I can't imagine they're too stuffy. There are parks & there's a dog park down on the river at the end of 51st Street. There is a group in Sutton Place to protect the area & support gardens & there's also the Turtle Bay Neighbothood group with a wonderful website. Maybe just whichever unit you prefer or whichever location is better. Let me know what you decide & best of luck!

It's not that stuffy, depends on the building.

I love beekman. It's one of the few places in NYC where people still smile and greet you as you walk past each other. The Dog Park over there is great as well--definitely a dog friendly type of place. Personally, I'd take Beekman over Murray Hill any day.

awwwww #8 needs attention - probably a sad sad act mad at the world, raped by his/her father while growing up. Go do something useful and kill yourself.

From those of us who are actually trying to gain some information here, we thank you morons #8,9,10 for derailing the conversation. BEEKMAN PLACE, ANYONE ?

i went and saw a 1 bed right by the doggy park... very quiet area. but i agree with an earlier poster that it sorta depends on the building.... i walked by some that exuded a smidgen of stuffiness

Like I previously said, it depends on the building you choose to purchase/rent in. If your going to buy a pre-war coop with a river view, most of those coops are going to be a little stuffy. If you have a problem with stuffiness, either choose the right building or don't move here. I've lived here since I was born (I am 35) and I live in a pretty stuffy prewar coop but it nothing compared to what would be on Park Avenue.

I'll take 'stuffy', 13. I love that area & there are some magnificent buildings over there. However, back to stuffy. Do you feel that you have to tiptoe around & can't be fun & modern? Do the neighbors look at you funny if you display some exuberance? I guess I'm looking for a definition of stuffy & how it manifests in day to day life in your 'stuffy' building. I'm jealous, I think.

For me, it's a no-brainer. It's quiet so you get a little bit of suburban "peace" smack in the middle of the city. It's beautiful. Despite the dog park, it's fairly clean (the buildings and the residents really takes care of neighborhood). There's even a security patrol for the 2 or 3 square blocks (look for the uniformed person in the SUV).

I'm sure many will describe it as stuffy, but that's all relative. It's not as stuffy as Park Avenue, Sutton Place, etc. And as #14 points out, it also depends on your definition of stuffiness.

Does anyone know the deal with 420 East 51? There are only 63 total listings in Beekman (across all price ranges) in Streeteasy, of which only 36 is not "in contract." Yet, out of the 63, 10 listings (6 not in "contract") is from that one building. It's not a new development....

Stuffy. #15 says that Sutton is more stuffy than Beekman. Interesting, I don't know. Anyone else?
