Discussion about
http://www.downtownexpress.com/de_321/gatewayrent.html Why are tax payers asked to pay the rents for people living in these doorman building apartments? The tenants got cheap rent for decades at our expense and now that their gravy train is over they are asking us (in these economic times) to continue to pay their rent for them? They should pay market rent and LeFrak should fork over big bucks for the ground lease. My landlord's property taxes keep going up and up so he charges me more. The only difference here is that these people at Gateway have been paying below market rents while I've been paying market rates. So Silver is saying, we're going to continue to pay the rents for the people with the sweet deals and we're going to continue to force people who have been paying more than their fair share to pay even more - well the handout is up and they should pay up.

The NY State Senate is a circus. Today the Democrats and the Republicans both held separate senate sessions in the same room at the same time. If your unbale to attend the circus, Albany might be a good laternative.

The BPCA runs a surplus each year (thanks to those high maintenance fees and ground rents) that is supposed to be used to fund low income housing. So your BPC ground rent dollars are being used anyway for keeping rents low in other areas of the city. If Gateway residents lost RS then the larger surplus would still be used for low income housing. It would not reduce other market rate ground rents.
In years past (starting with Guiliani) the surplus was added to the general city coffers but Bloomberg agreed to change that and use the money for its original intended purpose.
I'm not defending RS as it stands today but just pointing out that using Gatewau as an example does not agree with the points you're making whether you live in BPC or not.

Why are tax payers paying for illegal alien's healthcare and education?
This whole country is going to collapse eventually.
