Serenity Movers (www.serenitymovers.com). A husband and wife team. She handles the business and he manages the move. I found them last year and they were unbelievable. It's hard to describe but the move was almost a spiritual event. I never had a person make me feel so at ease. My wife was a nervous wreck worrying about the horror stories you hear about moving companies and this guy basically came in and said he was hear to serve us and that my wife was a princess that deserved to be treated to calm and "serenity". I thought the name of the company was a bit hokey until I actually met this guy. And the best part is that he is a former Israeli Soldier who decided it was his calling to be the best mover he could be...I can't wait to move again just so I can work with him again.

We recently used Brownstone Brothers and they were exceptional. We had received 3 estimates and they were right in line with the others plus we were impressed with their professionalism. They explain how the price is computed and then, once it's set, it's a flat rate so there are no surprises. They were on time, pleasant and polite, nothing broke (I have lots of china and crystal), and worked very hard and very fast. They work with Chubb insurance and explained how the insurance works so if you have your own, they counsel you to not buy theirs. I also like that they've been in business for a long time, have their own long-term storage facility in the Bronx, and can do a move that's plain vanilla or with lots of special handling (art, pianos, etc.). I also really, really liked that every worker was an employee of Brownstone, not a day worker, and on our 6 person crew, the shortest time any of them had worked for the company was 2 years; one had been with them for 14 years.

A comment on Flat Rate -- when I was researching movers before we hired Brownstone (and I did tons of research, e.g., Better Business Bureau, state consumer affairs complaints, etc. etc.) I was told that Flat Rate holds their individual workers responsible for any breakage and this is why, should something go wrong and you file a claim for reimbursement, it can take a long time to collect because Flat Rate goes after the worker for the money. I couldn't get Flat Rate to confirm or deny this but it was enough of a question mark that I didn't use them. It's not the practice at Brownstone but I think it's something to ask about with any mover.

moved in January. Got three estimates one of them from Flat Rate. When I informed them that I selected another mover, they reduced the price. I did not respond and the supervisor called and reduced it again. At the end they negotiated against themselves and it became pathetic. yes they were lower by $50 in their final offer but who would do business or thrust a company that does not give you the best deal at first and calls three times with three different prices?

I had the same experiece with Flaterate as 007 did. They simply refused to acknowledge the possibility that I would go with another mover. I also found it disconcerting that the guy they sent to do the estimate had no moving exeprience at all. He was a recent transplant to NY who was a writer. At the end of the day, even after Flatrate negotiated when not asked to, and refused to take the move off thier list of moves for the day, I went with OZ. Price wise, they were in the same ballpark but they sent a professional to do the estimate and did the job without a hitch or a scrath in much less time that I would have expected. OZ is the Wizard.

I used All Star (the NY-based one) a couple of times. They're not the cheapest and they won't coddle you, but they are very professional, don't play games, stick to their estimates and get things done well and on time. That's all I want from movers. I also had a good move to TX with Moovers, but they are CA-based and do mostly interstate moves.

I'll echo StF62. Had 2 great moves with All Star. Not the cheapest, but they don't screw around, don't nickel and dime you, were on time, and didn't break anything either time. 1st move was by the hour, 2nd did a flat rate.

Used DUMBO moving just recently. Great experience and lowest quotes I got. Didnt have to sacrifice quality for price. Nice people too which made the day that much less stressful.
