WASHINGTON -- A leading congressional Republican lambasted Democratic New York Rep. Anthony Weiner yesterday for calling on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac to lower lending standards even though defaults on mortgage loans are widely blamed for the nation's current economic crisis.

"The English vocabulary doesn't extend -- it's beyond counterintuitive, it's beyond irresponsible, it's beyond ridiculous," said Rep. Jeb Hensarling (R-Texas), who sits on the House Financial Services Committee.

Hensarling was responding to a letter Weiner and Financial Services Chairman Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.) sent this month to the heads of the taxpayer-backed mortgage giants, saying new condo mortgage restrictions "may be too onerous" and could "impede the goal of stabilizing condominium markets."

I've said it many many times, Weiner (and pretty much everyone in this state) is bought and paid for by unions. No wonder this is one of the worst states to start a business.... or send your kid to public school.

you have no clue what your talking about. NY has some of the best schools in the country. If I had kids, I would much rather send them to school in Westchester than Kentucky.

Folks with money in Manhattan, if their kid isn't going to stuy or hunter (with sub 7% acceptance rates) they're going to private schools.

Yes... Stuy gets penalized for a high income area (not recognizing that Stuy kids are not high income). I guess the authors didn't go to a good high school.

Most of the NYC schools listed are Private schools. Anyone who thinks NYC public schools are great (other than 2-3 good ones) must belong to the teachers union.

That's basically true, except maybe Bronx Science (or BS, as I like to call it). But what's also true is that so many Stuyvesant students are admitted to so many top universities that some of them have actually put one-year Stuy admissions quotas in place when too many accepted kids make the "wrong" decision as to where to attend. Princeton did just that in the 1980s, before early decision was the norm, and I've heard it's happened other times.

In the end, you're still talking about a school that sends more kids to Harvard, Yale, MIT (by far). If alpine thinks his shitbox in NJ is better, all good for him.

well known that hchs gets first dibs on best/brightest of those who understand the specialized hs system in nyc--they go to hchs from 7th grade onward--all the rejects of those who qualify for the hchs test apply to stuy--most get in
that's why hchs sends such a higher rate than stuy to top colleges--and if you cant grasp that rate is the proper metric for this otherwise quite flawed analysis, i wonder.....
