We need a window A/C (or two) for our new place on 98th ... is there a good store uptown or do we just go to PC Richard at Union Square? TIA ali r. {downtown broker}
pc richard on b'way between 86 & 87
thanks!
I hate PC Richard's; the folks there are so incompetent. Go to RCI at Broadway & 98th. Independent, around since the 1930s, knowledgeable, have good installers. It may be a few dollars more than PC Richard's, but I like to support the little guys who actually know what they are doing.
Drimmer's in Brooklyn (they give our firm a break on prices, deliver, etcv. and Brenda really knows what she's talking about). You don't have to go there - do it all by phone. It's where both Gil and I buy almost everything.
Forget the phone, I deal with Debra at Drimmers - very efficient, email will do. I believe they are closed on Fridays. debra@drimmers.com. No, I'm not affiliated in any way.
If it's not too late, Ali, you need to do all the research online to figure out the very narrow range of BTUs that are appropriate for your rooms (look for a calculator -- ConEd or consumerreports might have one), then ideally figure out the right models. I like digital controls, so you can set an exact temperature.
Places that sell A/Cs tend to know nothing, and will sell you whatever they have around or whatever has the best margins for them.
Also, I like Yudin's in NJ (by phone & delivery). Orthodox hours.
Does anyone know where to buy the bars that go on top of the air conditioner so that I can open the window with the air conditioner installed?
Local HW stores should have them. Are you on UWS?

We got a number of window A/c's a few years ago. They all work fine, but we wish we had done it differently. They block light and let in street noise.
You may be better off buying a multi-zone mini-split system. These won't cost you much more and can cover multiple rooms. Typically much quieter and higher efficiency. The catch is that the compressor will be installed outside your apt. If you are on a high floor and your building allows you to install on the roof this is easy. Else, you'll need to get permission to have a mount on an outside wall.
I don't know/can't recommend a local dealer. Google search leads to this site, which may help as far as general information is concerned

just bought from amazon.com - great price, free shipping.
We got the first one at PC Richards and will go to RCI for the second -- thanks emmapup -- their prices are actually bettter.
30 years, thanks for Drimmers, but I can't imagine not playing with an A/C first. RCI will actually let you hear how loud the units are.
Joe, I can't imagine our co-op is going to let us mount a compressor outside.
Emmitt, for that kind of thing I would check in with Artie's on 14th.

As far as air conditioner installation is concerned, Air Conditioner New York (www.airconditionernewyork.com) recommends visiting the closest appliance store. It all comes down to your comfortability with the staff in the store.

We also recommend purchasing your unit online and avoiding the hassle.
