25% of the move cost, in cash. divided out by each person... Considering its hours of physical hard labor, it is appropriate.

Our movers asked for between 18% and 20% on overall cost. They also wanted the main guy to take the money so he could divide it between his crew.

Well, after reading the other thread about the "hidden" costs of moving, I realize now I was also almost taken for a ride. I just moved two weeks ago and used Oz. I packed everything myself, leaving only furniture and a TV for the movers. When I realized what was going on when the movers tried to tack on extras (like putting the TV and tv stand in boxes, putting my lamps in boxes, etc), I told the head guy to keep all the "extras" off the books, and I'll take care of him and his crew at the end. The move went perfectly and they were professionals the whole time. They came in just slightly over the quoted time but I expected that and it wasn't for lack of effort. I tipped very generously but I also think this is the type of service where a bigger tip seems appropriate (it's hard labor after all). I tipped each guy $100 (there were 3) for a move that totaled $725. People said I was crazy but the guys seemed to appreciate it and I was just happy everything went well.
