Second Avenue Subway setback: New hurdles will likely push phase one completion from 2015 to 2017 http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/2009/07/21/2009-07-21_new_setback_may_push_second_avenue_subway.html
As long as I have ever lived in New York City (since 1979), I have been hearing "the Second Avenue subway is going to be...." and "looks like the Second Avenue subway is delayed again..." There was an interesting article somewhere in the past year with a timeline of this project. It has now been going on for 100 years or more.
Fast cheap or good. That 100+ years has bought us a change from a six-track system to a two-track, at an added cost that can't even be expressed in the limited set of whole numbers available to us.
That's pretty tough on the UES - they need this thing to go through asap. First the finance world blows up, then Madonna moves in, now this.
Which is why Long Island City is so great! The #7 train goes nonstop to Washington DC!
I guess we shouldn't be surprised. When work started in early 2007, there was a six year schedule to a target completion date of 2013. By early 2008, the completion date had slipped to 2015, so a year of work had turned a six year project into the seven years remaining project. One year forward, two years back.
My mother lived next to Third Avenue El which they knocked down promising the Second Avenue IRT. That was 60 years ago.
> First the finance world blows up, then Madonna moves in, now this.
Because finance is now suddenly only on the upper east side? Thats funny. All that Tribeca money must be folks who made their money developing Long Island City.
And lets not forget... Renee Zelweger and Matt Damon joining the clan. I told you this was gonna happen...
> That's pretty tough on the UES - they need this thing to go through asap.
Of course, they somehow managed to have the most expensive properties without it, so "need" is a funny word.
Woah, chill out Defender of All Things UES - I don't think it's a stretch to say there's a lot of finance money on the UES. "Because finance is now suddenly only on the upper east side" is pure strawman.
"Of course, they somehow managed to have the most expensive properties without it, so "need" is a funny word."
That has nothing to do with it - I'm talking about the congestion on the 4/5/6. Are you denying that one too?
"Woah, chill out Defender of All Things UES - I don't think it's a stretch to say there's a lot of finance money on the UES. "Because finance is now suddenly only on the upper east side" is pure strawman."
Except you're the one who already attributed it to the UES! Oh my lord!
> That has nothing to do with it - I'm talking about the congestion on the 4/5/6. Are you denying that
> one too?
No, its absolutely the most popular, and the one that runs the most frequently. (6 every 2.5 minutes during rush hour, i love it!). I'll take the crowd when it gets you that kind of frequency... but I do feel for the people on York.
Of course, all us old farts with canes and limos don't really care.
I have been watching "construction" on the second avenue subway since 2007. Those workmen are very good at pretending to actually be doing something. First they pretend to work on the east side of the street. A few months go by and then they go to the west side of the street. Then another few months go by and they are back working on the east side of the street which if they were really doing their jobs would be finished so that they would not have to reopen the east side of the street.
If this were germany, the 2nd avenue subway would be done 2-3 years tops. I feel sorry for the 2nd avenue businesses that have suffered.
"Those workmen are very good at pretending to actually be doing something."
That's an improvement over the workmen on the various "repairs" of the #7 in the '90s.
They didn't even pretend. A crew of 12 men would stand around on the tracks for hours
at a time while one of them did something very physical - work - with a little help
from a second. The other 10 or more?
If only it were captured on film.
And let's not forget the infamous hole on the BQE that was repeatedly repaired, in the exact same spot, month after month after month. Until, that is, the Brooklyn Borough President was just a little often a victim of those traffic jams. The hole stopped being repaired.
The new subway from 96th to 72nd (phase 1) will help who again?
Let's say you're me and you are at 72nd street and you wanted to go for a swim at asphalt green. I'm thinking...take the new fresh Subway for $8 dollars (projected subway fare) or take a $10 cab (projected fare). Got to get over to East End Avenue, cab it is!
Well at least the 2nd Ave Subway will NEVER BE CROWDED!!!!!!
falcogold, I think we've been over this before. Phase I will create an extended Q train, running from 96th to Coney Island, via 63/Lex and the existing Q stops: 57/7, Times Square, Herald Square, Union Square, and Canal Street ... then on to the city that only the dead know.
has anyone ever ridden on the train to the plane??
Second Ave Subway Setback:
Aggggghhhhhhhh!
Ubottom, do you mean the old one that was 1.5 minutes faster than the A train, or do you mean the current elevated money pit ("train to nowhere")?
"Except you're the one who already attributed it to the UES! Oh my lord!"
What? You come up with a strawman and try and spin it? Sorry, I think my point is perfectly valid, and I never said finance is only on the UES; you pulled that one out. This phase, as pointed out here, is only for the section in the UES. As for the actual trains there now, the 6 is scheduled to come often, but it breaks down quite a bit, which is a real problem, not to mention the crowding (which may be the worst line in terms of that); it's obvious the 2nd Ave trains will alleviate some of that mess.
Article from the times about the many groudbreakings.

Do away with unions and this would get done in a year.
by the time the 2nd Ave. subway is completed, we won't need it since we will all have flying cars!
and no way is it going to be finsished in 2017. 2017=2021.
> What? You come up with a strawman and try and spin it?
I didn't come up with it... you did!
> As for the actual trains there now, the 6 is scheduled to come often, but it breaks down quite a
> bit, which is a real problem
You're basing this on what? The view from williamsburg?
I haven't had a breakdown last.... hmmm.... 1000 rides.... maybe more. I've actually gotten more on lines I ride less. C is the worst, N is the best, 6 is in the middle (7% above total system average)... pretty awesome for the most frequent line. Its also average for intervals, again pretty awesome given its every 2.5 minutes!
Not to mention the choice of the 2 express trains....
What's your source?
and... lookie here... what do we find... ruh row. Fromt eh straphangers report:
"The L ranked worst and was much more overcrowded, with riders having only a 24% chance of getting a seat."
"I didn't come up with it... you did!"
Sorry, that's just not true. All I said was that the finance world took a big hit and that there's a lot of finance money on the UES - you're turning it into something else. Chill out.
"You're basing this on what?"
Actually, you said it yourself - it breaks down more than the average line. Whoops.
"and... lookie here... what do we find... ruh row. Fromt eh straphangers report:
"The L ranked worst and was much more overcrowded, with riders having only a 24% chance of getting a seat.""
Look how excited you get over nothing! The L was rated the second best line in the whole system and rated well above average in every metric except being able to get a seat. You should read the whole report before you wet yourself with excitement.
spin, spin, spin, baby.
You just got spanked.
You tried to pull out the congestion stat and - WHOOPS - L is the most congested of all lines.
You have to be joking. What a huge crock - the L breaks down much less frequently that the 6. I write that the 4/5/6 are very crowded and that the 6 has trouble with breakdowns (all accurate) and you get in a tizzy about it, and turn it into a pissing contest about whose subway line is better (why you brought up the L). That's the difference here: I wrote those things because I would like to see the problems addressed, for the benefit of the entire city, and you have to spin it to this utter bs. If anyone got "spanked" it's you.
*I wrote those things because I would like to see the problems addressed, for the benefit of the entire city, whereas you really want to show an anonymous message board how much more "awesome" your subway line is, and spin it into this utter bs.*
Don't try and change the story because you got proven wrong again.
I don't think its the best line, I just enjoy pointing out your disingenous attempts to "advise" when its just a thinly veiled attempt to pump your own neighborhood. You got caught in your own BS again.
I pointed out similar "mistakes" you make about other neighborhoods while you tried to prop up your own as well (and that lie was about Ft. Green - you going to tell me I'm propping up that neighborhood, too, right?).
You give out bad information and pretend you're being neutral, when you're about as slanted as it gets.
Seriously, you're just a good old fashioned liar. I tried to "advise" and "pump my own neighborhood"? What bs. Who brought up the L or Williamsburg? You. And what a hypocrite for calling others out on "advising." That's all you do around here - get off the soapbox and learn something once in a while.
> Seriously, you're just a good old fashioned liar.
Spin it all you want, you lied about train times in the Ft. Green discussion vs. WB, you've lied about a host of other topics, and you're wrong about this too.
I'm not a liar for pointing out your lies.
But you are a hypocrite for claiming I am...
> I tried to "advise" and "pump my own neighborhood"?
I don't believe you're really this dumb, but in case you are, going off on other neighborhoods, like UES, and Ft. Green, and Dumbo while promoting your own is CERTAINLY pumping.
Keep pumping out your same old tropes - it's bs all the same. I did not lie about train times (and it was Greenpoint, but you're loosey goosey on the facts, so not surprised), nor anything in this thread, sorry. And I didn't "go off" on the UES - I pointed out a need for the SAS and noted that the neighborhood (like many others in this city) has been affected by the recession, sorry you're so sensitive to that. And again, YOU brought up my neighborhood, so don't be surprised when I correct you on your misrepresentations and lies. What a joke.
> Keep pumping out your same old tropes - it's bs all the same.
You can call it bs all you want, but you lied multiple times, and its saved on the threads. You can say "I didn't lie" all you want, but thats just another lie.
Yes, I do find it pretty funny.... but if I were you I'd seek help.
and "DUMBO is a niche neighborhood".
Now THAT was a good joke, though.
Keep it coming with the classless insults, but again, you're the only person going off on me about any of this (sounds like a hall monitor to me, trying to "correct"). Several others agreed with me about Greenpoint's commute to midtown, and you're the only person who's disputed my calling Dumbo a niche neighborhood. It's telling that the two neighborhoods you're so defensive about are the ones you've lived in. And I won't even get into the whole EddieWilson persona/lies that you'll continue to avoid addressing.
> you're the only person going off on me about any of this
Another lie, not surprised!
> the only person who's disputed my calling Dumbo a niche neighborhood.
and another!
> It's telling that the two neighborhoods you're so defensive about are the ones you've lived in.
I lived in Ft. Green? Chelsea?
Wow, you really rack them up!
Keep the lies coming, I need more amusement!
"Another lie, not surprised!"
Calling something a lie doesn't make it one. But nice try.
"I lived in Ft. Green? Chelsea?"
Are you just playing dumb? Clearly referring to UES and Dumbo.
> Calling something a lie doesn't make it one.
But calling a lie a lie doesn't mean its not still a lie.
> Are you just playing dumb?
No, just pointing out how you lied again! I'm vigorously defended areas I didn't live in... Ft. Green was probably the biggest example!
You can spin it all you want, but just more lies...
