We were never going to go to zero four figure bottles of wine and no helicopter flights. That the numbers dipped so far was not an indicator that money was no longer being made. It was an indicator of how comfortable were those who normally make these purchases. During 1999 I am sure a lot of helicopters were hired and a lot of four figure bottles of wine sold, but if you compare the total comp figures from back then to total comp figures for the last two years do you really want to go back there?

The really big question is what will the environment look like in the future. We could have a stronger economy with a much lower % of the profits in finance (which would actually be healthier overall) and those remaining in finance will feel very comfortable spending large. And they would still number in the large numbers. But overall it would mean lower $ headed into the NYC economy.

Maybe Delmonico's will only sell 2.5 four figure bottles per week in such an environment.

What about the overwhelming majority of New Yorkers who would hesitate to forego tap water for a bottle of sparkling water from Italy? The rich will always take care of themselves - sometimes there is a time lag for the next bubble to kick in.

$4000+ is a lot for a bottle of wine when a gallon of Ripple costs under $10.

it does seem like a $4000 bottle should come with a lap dance or two. or three. or twenty for your bestest friends.

Actually, I must say - when I hire a car from midtown to JFK, depending on the day of the week and the time of day, it can cost $60 - $80 with tip, toll, etc. On a good day, it takes 30 minutes, on a bad day, upwards of 75 (or more).

If that helicopter ride really does leave from 34th, get to JFK in eight (?!?) minutes, and only cost $159, well, I just might start doing that. I thought those helicopter rides cost upwards of $300 one way from midtown to JFK....

U.S. Helicopter is defunct, they closed in late 2009. I don't think there are any commercial helicopters flying to the airports now.

Not for those of us who actually bought GE back in 2009 when this post was first made. We've got trees now.

The RE green shoots, methinks the billy goat ate them in 2009. And 2010. And...

That's what happens I guess when a plant tries to get started at too high an elevation.

I do believe it was the fed chairman that uttered the green shoots cheer because it's his job to keep you from shitting in your pants under the circumstances. He saw the green shoots as the beginning of recovery the way we view the primordial soup as the beginning of human life. For starters...we wait patiently millions of years for the first amino-acid chain and ............. IT IS ALIVE!!!

Enjoy the soup!
