Discussion about
What do you feel are the pros and cons of renting and buying in Murray Hill? Walking distance to Midtown business district vs. lack of nightlife?
PROS
Great for East Side Commuters
Plentiful grocery shopping
Close to Grammercy Park and Union Square
2nd Ave Subway line could benefit this neighborhood
Great single scene for those in their 20's
Rental and purchase prices at a discount to most neighborhoods
CONS
Besides grocery and drug stores not much retail for shopping
Not a very family neighborgood - shortage of school options
Lot's of condo and rentals going up in the neighborhood - could depress prices short term
Not great access for Westside commuters
I have lived in Murray Hill for 17 years and disagree that it is not a family neighborhood. I have two young children and there are tons of other young families in the area. It is one of the most convenient areas in the city - a 10 minute ride from everywhere and has some very well run and established co-ops - (ie The Carlton Regency.) The side streets are gorgeous and it is VERY SAFE. Also, as far as retail shopping is concerned - there are a lot of small boutiques on third avenue and Lord and Taylor is a few blocks West. Bloomingdales is exactly a 5 minute cab ride or a 25 minute walk in nice weather. I love Murray Hill and feel it is up and coming.
i live in murray hill but moving to park slope. i have loved every minute. one day i will be back
Lived in Murray Hill for 4 years(10- yrs ago), tried UES, Hells Kitchen, Midtown West and am moving back(now have a family) once charleston is ready. Have not tried the village, but compared to UES, Midtown West Murray Hill is great. Good public school, convenient, food and grocery is great
Number 2 -have you explored schools in Murray Hill? PS is great till grade 5, lots of pre K schools and UNIS
Number 2-retail shopping situation in Murray Hill is supposed to improve in a few years-
i loveeeeeeeeeee murray hill. i want to buy a pied a tierre
I agree about Murray Hill not being very family oriented. There is a lack of private school options and parks and playgrounds as compared to the UES and UWS.
i know that there are some half way houses in MH.
