Obtaining multiple mortgage rate quotes

Discussion about
Is it common practice and advisable to put through applications with both a mortgage broker and a directly with a bank to better determine if we're getting a good rate with either? If doing this, should we only expect to pay the application fees for each in order to get mortgage commitment letters, perhaps dependent on appraisal?

whaaa? shop the rates before you apply, like any other reasonably intelligent person
