Looks like a list of heads of private schools, so I think their peer group would be executive directors of non-profits, not teachers. In that context, their compensation probably isn't outrageous. The ones who are effective managers, fundraisers and educators might even be worth the money. Whether those comp levels are sustainable, now that the donor/customer base is suffering, is another question.

Think Charlie Gibson's wife used to be head of one of the private schools, and they did live in "school" housing.

There's a website somewhere that lists non-profit salaries (I think they have to be filed as part of tax return). I alluded to this in a previous posting. Those non-profit jobs (not just teaching, think head of JCC, 92nd St Y) can make very good money.

patient09, what is so sweet about this? Most VPs at banks make this kind of money. In my view these principals are underpaid given the responsibilities they have.

They get paid the big bucks to try to maximize the number of adults who write "teachers' pay" instead of "teachers pay" ... one might assume from this subject line that teachers are handing out cash to students.

But yes, headmasters, not teachers.

Most VPs at banks make $400-$500k? I don't think that is correct.

LICComment, should have been clearer: VPs in the front office. My point is principals have enormous responsibilities compared to a VP in a bank and should be compensated well.

uwsmom: for a while now, private school administrators have had pretty hefty paychecks.
