Sorry guys - I'm sick - still sick - a week already. I'm sad. Was looking forward to a fun child free night. I don't want to get anyone else sick although I doubt I'm still contagious. Drink at least 4 for me. If for some reason I make a remarkable recovery I'll stroll over. You never know.

Alan - I was hoping to exchange tomatoes. I'm bummed.

cccharley -- I'm not joking when I tell you that I brought a little nickel-bag of Marglobe seeds with me today to give to you. You have plenty of time for a bump or two of symptom-relief drugs to kick in. We'll see you tonight.

[Or, if you really insist, just feel better.]

Unlikely, but possible I could drop by. If so, it would likely be around 8:15. I will not have bells on but may be carrying some rolls of toilet paper. (Please...don't ask.)

fun was had by all. BUT unbeknownst to us it was a raging madhouse (who would have guessed, 36th and 5th?. next time we will scope out the location better, find a place a bit more sedate and pick a specific place within to meet. it might be better to avoid thursday as well, i'm so far beyond my youth that i'd forgotten that's the day the young begin to play.

Yes, lots of fun.

Present:
Well first of all there's me. And also aboutready, lizyank, nyc10023, urbandigs, 30yrs, glamma, manhattanfox, shen (?), and probably others I'm forgetting (apologies!) -- all really terrific! A great mix of some from the prior meetup, and some newer faces.

But between the flu and school obligations, so many couldn't make it that I think we should do another soon. Maybe early- to mid-November? (But I'll be out of town until Nov. 5)

I agree we should do it again soon. Early-mid November would be great timing as we could do the first ever SE "baby shower" (don't know what gifts would be appropriate, maybe little replica buildings although they are probably choking hazards for kids) for 10023 and uwsmom.

Loud second to Glamma's cooment..both points.

Okay I am LMAO (and can't stop) as they say but I can't help thinking the woman in the picture may very well be a perfectly warm, wonderful and SANE individual. Or it could really be Carol (whose identity will no doubt be revealed one day in the POST and I don't mean Page Six)

Hi, jsfitz22! Sorry we missed you, too. Yes, it was Wine & Roses last time, and a similar place has been suggested for the next one. We should probably collect email addresses at the next one, for the purpose of meetup alerts, given that SE doesn't have the function built in.

Hi, 30yrs! I think the stock phrase is "I believe we have a wiener." I wonder exactly which homosexual varco2 fantasizes ("worries") about being nearer to...?

10023, i have a few. but i need to chat with them. any preferences for location? i think hk would be tough, bars are too active. i have two ideas for flatiron, one in chelsea, one union square/gramercy, one kips bay, and one UES. all have full bar, decent prices, and reasonable finger food available if we wish to start on the earlier side, which might be wise to grab enough space and endear ourselves to the location. i know you don't care for the food, but the bar at the former Rain and now Bao, if not overwhelmingly busy these days (haven't been in a couple of years), is a great meeting space.

also, i'd think we would have better luck with a tuesday or wednesday.

jasonkyle, i just thought the actress's expression was unbelievably funny. come to the next gathering.

I've organized a couple of private dinners for another internet discussion group (investors) and would recommend Moran's Chelsea @ 10th and 19th. They have a large private backroom (with a bar) that I used for dinner for 40 and could easily hold 60 or more just for drinks, and the costs there were way under anything else I could find in Manhattan. Something like $60 per person total, nobody else was under $100 for a private room. Harvard Club was over $200 per person with their union labor!

http://www.moranschelsea.com/

I did dinner not just drinks but if the room is free (and other times I have been there for dinner in their main dining room it is usually empty) I bet they would let us use it, set it up with a cash bar (the main bar is just around the corner too). They also have several smaller private rooms in the place.

modern, many people show up for just a drink or two. the total for the w&r meeting ran under $20 per person, average, so a formal space might be difficult to arrange.

i've been to moran's a number of times, and the main room is usually quite quiet. that might work. i'll stop by and chat unless someone else makes it there first. i'm using this as an excuse to hit all of my favorite places, and some new ones, to chat with the managers and bartenders and eat out as well. my research will make me fat but happy. if you have a place in mind, just ask what the bar scene is like after work. i've found the restaurants and bartenders are happy to share info, and make suggestions. one promising place today told me that if i could bring in a few people early, we could basically just comandeer the entire bar area going forward. starting the drinking evening early would be a sacrifice, but i'd be willing to make one for the team.

I like Moran's well enough, but not a private room. Too formal and purposeful, too much obligation to the venue.

I agree that we'd like something quiet. W&R worked because we were outside, not inside. GH worked, but was very loud; nonetheless, I wouldn't really mind that one again. But what I'd really like to avoid is something with anything more than a tiny amount of seating, which can kill the mingling. And I do like the cheap, drop in/drop out, freeflowing notion regarding format.

Hopefully we can find a better way of finding one another than running around the place saying "StreetEasy? StreetEasy?" or writing that on our foreheads.

ok, i think i've hit the jackpot here. it's a bit of a compromise, a private space with little to no obligations and not formal.

the chef/owner, jay, at shaffer city has done a couple of lovely, reasonable parties for me. i explained that we wanted an informal gathering, not too much obligation, not much seating, for anywhere from 15 to 50 people. and he said sure. on tuesdays and wednesdays the restaurant doesn't use the back area, which is curtained off.

so for about $10 per person for food not including alcohol (if you eat, none if you don't, and a bit more if you consume like it's your last meal), we can have an area to ourselves which will be set up with some seating options but to discourage large-scale seating. and there is no time limit, so we can start at 6:30 and go forward, meeting the needs of those who'd like to stop by for awhile after work and those who'd like to linger or need to come later. and truly fabulous finger food will be provided. i'm happy to collect contributions and deal with payment, people were spot on with their amounts for the W&R shindig. and it will be a devoted space, so it will be easy to find.

it's on 21st street, b/t 5th and 6th, much closer to 5th.

09, jay has an awesome sense of humor. and it's one restaurant where you can walk in and say is Jay around, and he appears. of course it didn't hurt that i timed it so that i arrived with the two elderly people on vacation from florida, at 5:00. the hubby was like f'ng what are we doing eating now?

lizyank, if the group concurs will be in touch. but it really seems ideal. and it's a chef owned restaurant. he's so funny. he just looked at me and said, well, i really can't be charging yesterday's prices today, now can I?

it's not far from many of the subway lines. in case you can't tell, i'm kind of proud of myself for this one, so try not to shoot it down.

ignore this person I don't know if I am more worried about getting punched or punching someone or being near a homosexual

makes reference to the immediately prior poster, Rhino86, who felt it necessary to try to discredit Stevejhx by explicitly calling Steve a homosexual when Rhino86 was unable to make an argument that was convincing to Steve.
