I moved out in July, was told everything was fine, and large management company dragging their feet on returning my deposit. Any advice?

Best way to get a definitive, enforceable resolution is to file suit in NYC's Small Claims Court. Google it. Very simple if under $5000. Seriously-file suit, not a complaint. Just make sure you file against the formal legal entity and their address - the name of the party you make your checks out to and is on your lease.
Make sure to check the terms of the lease. Many contain a clause giving the LL a rather long time to return the deposit--I think the one in a place I rented last year was 8 weeks. Still doesn't hurt to call and check on things. With me the large management co. claimed to not know my new address, and then they claimed they were waiting b/c they didn't know whether to make the check out to me or my b/f. By calling I was able to resolve this and their bureaucracy spit out the check 9 weeks after I moved out. I know getting through to them is infuriating and this shouldn't be your job, but it is what it is. I don't think you'll need small claims if this is a sizable company. Just be persistent and try to make a friend of the person on the other end of the phone.
