Discussion about 1326 Madison Avenue #32
Property to world: Will anyone love me? so what's the hold up? Never visited but from the layout looks interesting. This one time delusional seller has clearly returned from fantacy camp and has drunk the coffee. This place smells like an easy sale. What's with the delay??? Did you see that crazy cool windowed closet? Plus the location is good. Wait a minute, I've got a telephone call to make.

It has a Decorative Fireplace, the most worthless feature ever. In fact it is a detriment as it prevents use of the wall space.

Why do people leave them in? Does anybody actually like them?

Decorative fps worked (mostly as coal-burning) many years ago. They can be pretty to look at.

Have seen this building. No doorman is definitely a "no go" for me, especially that far north.

nyc10023 - why is a previously coal burning fireplace now only decorative? Didn't it require the same depth as woodburning? The same flue?

Coal fires purportedly burn not as hot as wood fires. The old flues were typically not lined and over time, the mortar & brick for the flues may have degraded. Ditto the firebox for the fireplace, not to mention the heat generated by a woodburning fp may be too great for the floor joists, etc.

The "gold standard" for getting a wb fp to work properly today besides getting a new firebox built is to get the flue rebuilt with new bricks and/or lined with steel and/or have a fan up on the roof blowing out the smoke (not the tech. term).
