The Albert is a coop consisting of several buildings that were joined long ago. Most layouts in the building are outright bizarre. Some have no closets. Some face brick walls 15' away out of every window. The exterior of the coop is attractive and I wanted to like this building. But every apt I ever saw there was compromised beyond acceptability given price and carrying charges.

The Albert was originally a hotel. Perhaps at one time it catered to tourists who wanted to stay in the Village. In the 1970s it was primarily an SRO of questionable repute. Not as bad as the Earle on Washington Square or the Broadway Central on Mercer but not exactly somewhere you would want to live. Converted hotels whether low rent (the Albert) or super high (the Plaza) have their challenges when converted to residences.

Lizyank - you are so right - look at One Fifth - some layouts are really bad- but they get super high prices anyway. (But the lobby is absolutely fabulous).

I think it's a little hyperbole to sat "Most layouts in the building are outright bizarre". most aren't any great shakes, but not THAT many are "outright bizarre". It suffers from what most of the early Rockrose conversions did: too many apartments per floor (i.e. too chopped up). Take a look at the Cast Iron Building (67 East 11th) - I think the layout are worse there.

agree re 67 11 st--looked ther in mid eighties after theyd done it--almost tragic--such a nice bldg--but simply awful spaces inside
