Will my landlord go month-to-month?

Obviously, I won't know until I ask them, but I'm curious if anyone here has any experience with this. I'm in my first NYC apartment, a large doorman building managed by a large company. My lease is up soon, and am looking to find a slightly larger studio. So far, I haven't found anything I like, and I'd like to go month to month so I'm not under pressure to find something in the next 20 days, or wait a whole 'nother year. Can it be done? Should I be forthright about looking for a new place, or should I come up with a story like "my job might transfer me" or "I'm looking to buy"?

true--it's nice to see ll's a bit humbler these days--can't see why they wouldn't let you stay if there are comparable apts in the building available for rent

Mine had no problem going 3-month to 3-month (meaning I give him 3 months notice at any time), because I've been an excellent tenant and he knows I'm considering buying a place.

interesting thread. for the last 2 rent cycles i have negotiated rent and never submitted a signed renewal. effectively, month to month for over 2 years. now the cycle is once again up and i face a dilemna; negotiate again for lower rent, and risk a forced sign-on for another year, or leave it alone and continue to be month to month on the down-low while i look to move, hopefully by the end of the year.any suggestions?

i am in a glenwood building -- at lincoln center. they raised rents and are not negotiating but my neighbor asked to go month to month for a couple of months. they agreed and he has been doing it for over 6 months now. they haven't said a thing. 4 apts out of 8 on my floor have left in the last few months. i am next. I am glad they are not negotiating cause the rent is way too high here and their non negotiating tactics finally woke me up and got my a** in gear.

Landlords are quietly desperate and should negotiate anything reasonable unless they are stupid (perhaps no shortage of these or a gazillionaire like Lenny Litwin (Glenwood). I should know, I am a landlord (one of the stupid ones).

be passive aggressive - negotiate a rent, start paying that rent and don't sign the lease - then see what they do - very likely to do anything other than to cajole and threaten re signing a lease - but very very unlikely to try to evict a paying tenant.
