How to check out reputation of mangaing agent for coop/condo?

We recently saw a UWS condo apartment that needs work, but we're seriously considering. The managing agent for the building seems to be based in upatate NY and has a small 4 person office in NYC. Should this be any concern to us? Other than getting approval for renovations which we'd need to do, when else would we need to be in contact with the managing agent? The building has a small staff including a live-in super. Also is there an online way to check out info about managing agents, especially their reputation? Our broker is checking with his associates, but he had never heard of this company which we thought was a little odd. Thanks.
