Discussion about
Imagine how much better the city would be if it never snowed. Well, now that seems possible. Moscow will try it this "winter." http://news.yahoo.com/s/time/20091017/wl_time/08599193082200

if bloomberg just cut back a little on the campaign ads, there would be plenty left over to do this.

What an asinine plan.

For those of us who enjoy the few times of year when the snow actually sticks, this would be a tragedy. Don't like the weather? Move to Florida.

Are you implying that Boris Badenov and Natasha Nogudnik are behind this dastardly scheme?

I love the idea - there is no reason to have snow in a major city - it's great for an hour and then it's terrible and dangerous for days - if you like the snow then vacation in the Rockies (or move there for the winters) - snow and major cities are like oil and water.

Am I the only Baby Boomer who didn't make the connection between "Boris & Natasha" and the Cold War until adulthood. Or maybe subconsiously it automatically made sense bad guys=Russians.

New York City has been snowed on for centuries and thrived. It's normal weather - not some inconvenience getting in the way of your idealized big city. Live with it.

There has been research on cloud seeding for decades. I don't think anyone ever got it to work reliably.

That said, the most interesting take on this is the creation of weather wars.

In one of these scenarios, cloud seeding is used offensively to dump rain or snow on an opponent.

In another scenario -- a derivative of water wars -- one country "steals" all the water from the clouds for their own agricultural uses before the clouds can go to their neighbors. I seem to vaguely recall, but I don't remember if, there was ever a treaty effort on this.

SkinnyNsweet - more importantly I think that states in the West who have droughts and fight over water rights - they'll use cloud seeding to make it rain on their own crops.

evnyc - I understand that it's snowed for centuries here - I just hope it never snows here again - the snow has no use - if this were Hunter mountain fine - I say we ensure it snows all over our "mountains" but no snow here. I understand the slip and fall attorneys own our politicians so the idea of no snow would never get approved here - but at least let me dream a bit.

some of the best times I had in the city was going to the parks after a nice snow storm. nothing brings out the kid in you like a good snow ball fight or sled ride...are we going to meddle with mother nature now? yea, this cant miss

UD - and most of the worst times I've had in the city happen weeks after a snow storm - dog crap is all over the frozen yellow snow - it's March and the snow is starting to melt and on ever corner their is a huge ice puddle because the storm drains are still covered with ice - you can't cross the street without stepping in a huge puddle and getting a huge salt ring all over your boots - that's romantic right? If you all want the romance of snow (I readily admit that there is great romance and nostalgia in snow storms) then get it on your vacations or at your second home.

Again I realize this will never happen but that doesn't mean that your NOT IN MY SNOWY WINTER attitudes couldn't/shouldn't change.
Face it - snow is a HUGE net negative for Manhattan. 1 positive day for every 30 negative.
