Discussion about
We have the private area in the back at Shaffer City, November 11th, 6:30pm. 21st Street between 5th and 6th, north side of the street. Food will be available, extra $10. Okay, everyone show up. I will be there, unless I have delivered or am in throes of labor.
If you were Dolly Lenz, you'd be there even if in labor, with 12 blackberries.
Can we make a more specific way of ID'ing and make sure the place isn't a madhouse?
November 11th is my birthday....
If you've delivered, we'll see both of you there, and maybe we'll even chip in for the $10 for 10023 Juniorette's food.
Julia, that makes you a mandatory "yes".
finally one i can walk to. thank you whoever picked this place.
I post here infrequently, but still sadness...another gathering I'm not able to make. I'd be curious to put names/faces together... Ah well, perhaps another time.
@modern - LOL
bump
I think we'll be the only people in the private area, right?
"The freshest seafood served by the freshest chef."
30yrs, the only way it could be a madhouse is if we ourselves made it so. plenty of space, to the back, people will have to ask for SE group, think it will be pretty obvious if someone belongs. it was at the W&R get together.
modern, dolly's in a class of her own.
With huge regrets, I won't be able to attend because I will be out of the country. Drats. I really wanted to meet you all! Have fun!
not sure i can do this..might be accountable for all the surly things ive said
might have to restrain such stuff in the future
hmmmm
That evening is the annual benefit (being held at the Museum of the City of New York) for a non-profit whose board I am on, so I will have to make the next one.
Happy Birthday, Julia! Mine is the 12th & I'll be out of the country. This is the 3rd get together I'm not able to attend but I find myself both frustrated & relieved. Hmmm .......
I would really like to attend this one. How long do they typically last? 9/10ish might be doable for me, but is that too late? If hubby and come home in time, I will come.
if he CAN come home in time....
fever of 102. i'm a mess!
I was there until midnight both times.

It makes me sad when SE's glitchy system doesn't move a thread to the top (and change the "updated" time) when you post to it.
Does that happen to you too AH? I thought it was only me and I was taking it personally.
It happens a lot. SE needs to improve their discussion system.
i think it has to do with when you last reloaded the page. so...if you've had a thread open for an hour and then post, it thinks you posted an hour ago.
sounds good.
sounds good - I'm there unless I get sick again. I haven't been there in years. Will be fun.
Bump. I will try to make this one. Do you guys have a secret sign or handshake or something? I've never done these internet meet-up things before.
I might be able to make it.
Do.
bjw, we just swap blood.
we have a separate area in the back. will be easy to find.
mimi, would be lovely if you could make it.
Unfortunately, I can't attend. I'll be traveling. I will come to a future one.
ar, you got mail.
Just tried it tonight after the Samurai exhibit at the Met - great oysters!! expensive drinks -
will try to be there.
I will be in NY. I might go. So -- do people hurl insults and snarl about square footage calculations. Do some of these people look as crazy as they sound? Do enemies speak? Has there ever been an outbreak of violence? What's the polite way to greet a broker?
jim- great questions - should have asked them myself - looking forward to the answers.
really asking because CC might go for my jugular.
nyc10023, you are a Trooper! will save the date
bump
the events are lovely, civil and fun. the people are amazing and diverse.
jim, i'd suggest a simple "nice to meet you."
is this still om? time?
yes, it's all set. 6:30 until ?
Excellent, I'll be there! Jim, everyone is totally nice at these things. Julia, I call dibs on buying you a happy birthday drink.
AR: did you watch 30 Rock this week - "nice to meet you"!
no, but now i will. i need some distraction. thanks.
Is there a possibility that there could be just 10 people there and 27 different posters??
well, all five of me won't be able to attend.
anything's possible, apt23. but given who i've met at prior gatherings and the responses i've seen, i'd say unlikely.
we haven't heard from UD, have we? i think he has an obligation to attend, really i do.
cc, lame. i'd think you could spare at least one for the evening.
AR, you got mail
I shall attend.
"Can we make a more specific way of ID'ing"? Yes, each of us shall be neckid.
roman handshakes?
In addition to being Julia's birthday, Nov 11 is Veterans Day. Maybe we can all have a drink to all of our fellow Americans who made the ultimate sacrifice to allow this get-together to occur in the first place. A simple "thank you", instead of danke or ありがとうございました.
LOL apt23 & cc.
I am not able to attend this event. I don't think i can be in the same room with so many people who use the term "luck" so casually. it's very possible that my head will explode and i'm not willing to take that risk.
seriously, hubby has depositions for the next two weeks which means no reprieve for me.
have fun all. would really like to meet so many of you.
Amen Patient09. Alas, most of those who fought in that war are no longer here to receive our thanks but we can still honor them along with veterans of the Korean and Vietnam wars (sorry "conflicts") and those who serve today with honor regardless of what you think of decisions made at much higher pay grades. And who certainly do not should not be getting killed on their own base by someone in their own uniform who has sworn to "do no harm."
Off soapbox.
So I'm wondering what happens when folks who've called each other filthy names on SE meet up in person? As a relative newcomer to SE, I've gotten a lot of pleasure from reading the postings, but I'm dying to know how some of the angriest people online greet one another in person?
come and find out.
Would love to, but I'm leaving for Asia tomorrow. My compulsive apartment hunting will have to be suspended for two weeks. So please tell me, what happens?
we chat. we drink. we laugh. i stay too late. nobody wears any lampshades on their heads or dances on the bar (although hope springs eternal). i'm not aware of a single incidence of physical violence. i only hurl invective at 10023, because i like to torture pregnant women. sadly UWSmom is depriving me of an additional outlet.
what would you think happens? have a good trip, and come to the next one.
RLM: they are usually too chicken to show up. With well-known exceptions, people who give away too much information about themselves are gun-shy to meet in person.
Fistfights in the alley behind the bar? Hair-pulling? I just find it hard to believe that folks can be so uncensored and hostile online and then chat and laugh with each other in person.
I will try to come next time, though. As a therapist, maybe I can pass out my card. If I can't find an apartment I like, maybe I'll find some new clients.
We look like Rorschach blots.
sorry ar. i actually measured full-term at my 36 week visit today. i can't keep this up. i think i'm gonna blow any day now!
rlm - i imagine the meetings are very civil, even with some of the most controversial characters. your cards may come in handy though.
i would love to meet everyone....i'll be celebrating my birthday but I'll make a toast to the terrific people of streeteasy
When's your C scheduled? I'm going right to the bitter end. I'll be 37.5 weeks at the gathering.
well happy b-day julia!
no cs. vbac (fingers crossed). i can't imagine carry this large child for another 4 weeks!
i also can't imagine the day when i can spell again.
uwsmom, as long as you're aware of how lucky you are, no need for spelling.
best of luck. will meet one day.
julia, happy, happy. but i'm crushed that you wouldn't want to spend the anniversary of your birth with us. :)
Thanks ar. Even with a husband who works too much and a wild and crazy toddler, i have an incredible life. it's true. maybe one of these get togethers could happen on a weekend sometime.
uwsmom, best of luck and happy birthday to your soon-to-be-born - and to you since you do all the work. And same to you, 10023.
Julia, can't you even swing by for a free drink? Gotta milk those...
"I just find it hard to believe that folks can be so uncensored and hostile online and then chat and laugh with each other in person."
RMLC, that would be the difference between the innernetz and the real world. And the truly vituperative don't show up, which probably tells you something.
god ar, i'm s...l...o...w...... :)
thanks ev!
do the newbie posters go or is it just the gang of regulars?
apt23, of course newbies and oldbies and etc. go. we are always happily surprised by the people who show, often people who don't indicate on this thread that they'll go.
but all this analysis is a bit silly. come if you'd like to meet some fun people and have a good time.
I hate that I will miss another SE get together...I am in Cape Town, South Africa at the moment...a tough commute to NYC for the meet-up. I hope I'll catch you next time. I'm so looking forward to meeting everyone! Congratulations uwsmom! Happy Birthday Julia!

Though I would pay to see Riverside share bon mots with Columbia County, and I want to option all future exchanges (including any death scenes) between Nopigorshrimp and West 67, alas, I have an obligation I cannot change. So, AR, do your best to keep the peace and do tell all, really....All... the next day.
how much?
sorry all....cant make this one
I'll be there.
Mimi: Hope you got my message. Anyway, see you tomorrow night.
I hope to be there, but I'm in a very unstable situation.
You're due any day now, right? Hope all goes well.
how many people go to this?
aboutready
ignore this person
report abuse
bump
Who is paying for aboutready's drinks? She's entitled to free drinks because of all of her "insightful" comments on streeteasy. All of you guys there owe her. Just like her landlord owes her. Her husband owes her. The State and City owe her....
You must owe her a lot judging from the amount of time you spend on her.
jim, my guesstimate here is between 15-30. 10023, hope to see you. if not, you go girl.
Are dogs allowed?
w67thstreet are you going?
Think I'm going to have to pass. Seems like I caught AR's flu or something like it. And those lazy cats of mine refuse to go up to 33rd street and get me chicken soup from 2nd Avenue Deli...even if I give them cab fare.
Liz, I'm crushed. Feel better.
Liz, brandy.
Thanks Guys. Alan, I wish I had some brandy or "real" cough medicine. Just finished my grapefruit juice without vodka and it did nothing for my throat or my head.
Have fun....and have several for me.
I too have to pass, unfortunately. Had to have a wisdom tooth yanked out yesterday which means no booze for a while and lots of fun drugs that I can only enjoy solo. Hope everyone has fun and there's another one of these things in the new year.
lame, totally lame. mimi, alan, etc. show early. cccharley will accompany me so i don't have to sit and wait alone, bless her heart, but the more the merrier.
Sorry aboutready - in my experience, it's never much fun to sit and watch other people drink when you can't have any. I'd love to hear how it goes of course!
AR: Thanks for the heads-up on timing. I'll see you around 7:15.
Lame, lame, lame. AR, I will be there early, spouse possibly in tow. Need to finish up a couple of things and then heading out. Liz, cats are useless unless food is involved; have you tried bribery?
evnyc, my spouse will be there. we should have mentioned that spouses and friends are, of course, welcome. west81st, will be good to see you.
liz, our cat thinks we're lucky to have the opportunity to feed her. saucy creatures, felines.
AR,
dang, can't go, popped my knee.
So how was it everyone?
Apparently columbiacounty didn't enough to drink to make him happy.
riversider: looking for you...where are you?
oh columbiacounty my old flatulent friend, I'm amazed how dimwitted you are.
You actually think you are clever because you "figured out" who a new poster is based on the number that appears when you mouse over.
And yet with all that brilliance (whisky will do that for you, right?) you think I'm some bumbling moron who obsessively posts articles from the same blogs that your sister aboutready reads during her "spare time".
Oh old man, I bet you were ranting this morning that they changed November 11 (today) from Armistace Day to Veterans Day... that darn Eisenhower. Nothing like a good fight to get your heart pumping up to 45bpm, old cranky man.
yep....
you've convinced me...
yes, you are a bumbling moron.
I convinced a dimwit... good for me.
