Don't know how this came up... but are we the only city that "city" gets added and taken away at will? Think of this.. Kansas City is Kansas City. You never remove the word "city" and expect folks to think of the city. And Boston is never called "Boston City". And there's no "Chicago City". Officially, I'm pretty sure we're just New York. City of New York. New York is the county for Manhattan, bla bla. So, does the "city" get added because we're the only ones who left it off?
(from those with state names, obviously)
If we can dip into other languages, I believe Mexico City is actually the same -- I'm no expert, but I think you can leave out the "Cuidad de" in "Cuidad de Mexico" and just call the city "Mexico."
quebec city in english is simply quebec in french.
When my relatives from the South come up to visit, they always call it "New York City" and it always sounds little cornball to me.
I don't really hear New Yorkers call it New York City....only folks who don't live here. What do you think 10022?
Jersey City
New City
I grew up on Long Island and always referred to New York as "The City".
I found that people who use the term "The City" is only referring to "Manhattan."
