Discussion about
Hi -- Just finished my move on friday -- I was packed moved and unpacked for $3700 (excluding a 20% tip). The workers from Flatrate Elite were FABULOUS!. 9.-5pm -- two full days -- 6 people. My things were unloaded and nothing broke. I had a very full 2br/2.5 bath and DR. Lots of art/china, etc. I called 7 days in advance -- and set the timing up. Other than moving jewelry and furs myself -- I let the movers do everything. I would never again move any other way. BTW -- my new place is $2700 cheaper per month in rent -- so I will cover my costs in less than two months. Feeling Groovy...!

Congratulations! I used Flatrate Movers in LA a few years ago and they're now storing my stuff. They have been terrific on that side of the country, too.

Thanks for the tip, manhattanfox. I know you're reliable, I'm calling them tomorrow!

I'm the same way: $1,000 a month less for 50% more space. Poor landlords who won't negotiate!

amazingly expensive. Had them give me a quote for 2Br+ DR full kitchen to pack and unpack in Manhattan for under 2K and ended up negotiating both them and a competitor down. Oz bit them and were discounted from first appointment. In general when I asked for the first quote, I told them that I am getting 3 companies to bid and they still did not get it.

@julia - if you don't have one, you don't know what you are missing. I was never, ever warm in winter, no matter how many layers of cashmere and down coats, etc., until I got a fur. If you eat meat, wear leather, what do you have against furs?

If you are a vegan, well, then I get it.

Never had an issue with Flat Rate (4 moves, 9 years). A bit pricey.

007 -- I have an inordinate amount of things -- Hundreds of boxes in addition to the furniture. Flatrate came in the cheapest of three bids. It works out to $300/hour per person. It took 16 hours and I feel great about the whole process. Julia -- yes -- sorry I included that as I am not trying to make a political statement re: fur. Debscity -- sorry to hear that _- I have used them now four times in 12 years and had no issues.

nice!

its funny how on other threads folks complained about moving and said it wasn't worth it.... I'll easily take that tradeoff.

Hell, hire an assistant to do the details, you still save money.

(and, of course, buying with all that effortless finding a mortgage, calling handymen, etc.)

My penultimate move was with Ben Hur. It was three quarters of the contents of a 1-bedroom within the same building (my cleaning lady and I moved the kitchen and bathroom before the movers showed up), and it took 8 hours due to the incompetence of the movers. They charged by the hour, so it cost a small fortune. The foreman apologized that I had drawn the short straw and been assigned the novice team.

Having had that experience, it was great in my last move not having to worry about the Flat Rate guys idling about - they could do the job as inefficiently as they wanted, and it wouldn't cost me extra. And I liked not being nickel and dimed about an extra wardrobe here, a couple of extra boxes there.

Any estimates/guesses on how much to move 1000sqft 2bdrm with 7 pieces of heavy furniture? Need to move soon.

OMG so many problems this year. My foreman showed up, saw I was drinking tea and asked if I was sick too. He overflowed the bathroom toilet (in my old apt), dropped a box onto another box within 5 minutes of starting. I told him to go to Duane Reade and get what he needed, but didn't. In my new place on the hallway carpet he spit a loogie and then saw I could see and just said "sorry".

Their didn't seem to care much.

call for three estimates -- you will be surprised that while there is a range it is not crazily wide....

There are plenty of other Flatrate threads on here if you search "movers."

I used them for 4 moves in 2 years (2007-2009). Oscar's team was terrific, efficient, pleasant and exactly on time. Price was very negotiable and upgrade to premium service cost no more (although I did packing--not them--of all but lamps, strange shaped items and electronics).
