I have some neighborhood conundrum. Please help me choose where I should live! I have been on UES for~ever (90's and 70's throughout the years)... kind of want to have a taste of west side but not too familiar about the hood. Appreciate your two cents. Looking at two apts (to rent) on two sides of the park. (Sorry for those who think uptown is boring. I am a sucker for the park.) W 88th St: walk... [more]

Looking at two apts (to rent) on two sides of the park. (Sorry for those who think uptown is boring. I am a sucker for the park.) W 88th St: walk up, 1 block from central park. Based on my scouting, the block is quiet and quaint. However, I am worried maybe too quiet and not convenient. How's the living function in the mid to high 80's st? e.g. Dining, gourmet supermarket (Zabar and Fairway are both a bit of a walk... call me lazy) Are B,C train reliable? E 88th St: elevator, off 3rd Ave. I am somewhat familiar with the neighborhood. Convenient but lack of personality. In comparison, E 70's is more neighborhoody and cute. 6 train is certainly overcrowded but does run very frequent. Staying on the east side would be a lazy and familiar choice for me... but I want to snap out of my inertia. Will I regret moving to W 88th? Thanks thanks thanks. I hope I won't start a 2Pac v.s. Biggie war. [less]

That can be a very personal question.
I've lived downtown(south of 34th) all of my NYC living life and have lived both on the east and west side(s).
The lure of something "new" is always nice.
However I have found (can only speak for myself) that I have an internal comfort compass (for lack of a better term) on the east side. It's not something I can explain and may sound quite silly to some.
Whether it's a personal feng shui or whatever, I've always felt more out of sorts on the west side than the east.
If your renting, it may be worth a try as it's much easier to change your mind a year later than dealing with buying and selling.
