Discussion about
Im looking at an apartment at Carroll Gardens, Smith Street right next to the Canal. There has been some talk about underground polution at Gowanus Canal. I dont know what to make of it. So my questions with you knowledgeables are: 1) Is Carroll Gardens the "next" place to boom 2) How big a deal is the pollution? 3) Is it safe? And pleasant to live 4) How long is the ride to mid-town Lots of questions so HELP please!

I haven't really looked at it closely but PropertyShark has info about pollution. Good luck.

I think there is a federally designated "Brownfield" right on Gowanus Canal. Unles you are rolling in the dirt, drinking canal water, etc., its just as safe as any other area. Carroll Gardens is a great neighborhood, so is Gowanus. I wouldn't worry about it.

Go for a swim in the canal and see how you feel afterwards. Note any symptoms, nausea, vomiting, etc.

OP here. I dont mean drinking water off the canal or even going for a swim there. I wondered if the toxicity has gone into the water system as people seem to claim for the Williamsburg/Greenpoint area.
