Discussion about
Observed: Traffic cop starts writing parking ticket for guy sitting at red light with blinkers on. Guy protests, yelling at cop. Within minutes no fewer than nine cruisers and one unmarked car have converged on the scene. Ah, New York. Such a well-oiled machine. Keep up the good work, Bloomie! (And I'm not being sarcastic either--it's good to know the Finest are out there when we need 'em).
8 or is that an octopus?
I've seen 3, plus a brownie. When they wore brown.
Remember, the traffic cop isn't an actual cop. They're civilians. So the guy thought he was gonna get beat up and called the real cops.
When an officer (traffic or otherwise) calls for backup, the police do not gauge what is a proportionate response. All available units respond. It doesn't take but a second for a situation to turn and suddenly shots are fired and a cop or innocent civilian dies. Experience teaches that as soon as a situation threatens to blow up, back up is called for and the problem nipped in the bud. Here, I don't know what "Guy...yelling at cop" was saying. For all I know it was "put that ticket on my car and I'll blow your f-cking head off." Easiest way to avoid this? Don't break the law, don't drive with your flashers on for no reason, and when you are getting a ticket, fight it in court--don't act like a moron and have a temper tantrum shouting your head off at a guy doing his job. Even if you think he's wrong, screaming like a lunatic isn't the right response and you get what you deserve.
Compare police community relations to where we were 10 years ago. We've come a long way, baby, from the polarized city Bloomberg inherited.
