Discussion about
How much? I'm thinking $300 given to the manager, to share amongst the guys. I hardly ever use my car (1-2X a month) so I don't know all the guys names. I tip them $5 each time I pickup or drop the car, but like I said i never use the car so this doesn't amount to much. Am I tipping the right amount? And am I being naive in thinking the manager will share it?
That's my question exactly: Are you being naive in thinking the manager will share it. Since that is an unknowable, perhaps tip $10 when you pick up & drop off the car during the holiday season, perhaps Thanksgiving thru New Year, & then you'll KNOW where the money is going.
Thanks. Any other thoughts on this? How much do most of you give your garage ppl? Let's say you are in a garage w/ 3-4 attendants, how much would you give each?
One man's opinion (and curious if people will jump down my throat), but I think you're giving way too much.
I use my car maybe 3-4 times/month on average. I usually tip $2 or $3 every time I pick up or drop off a car. Sometimes I don't tip if I don't have small bills, but the guys know I'll make it up the next time with a bigger tip. Usually I give a bit more around the holidays. But, because I tip every time, I don't do any sort of annual tip.
I've been doing this for several years, never had anyone complain, never had any problems with my car that I know of, and all the guys always seemed very appreciative of my tips, and always very helpful.
I don't tip when I get the car once every 5 days. At holidays I end up tipping them all what comes to about 75% of a month's garage fee. About $40-50/guy. Bit more for manager.
Just to clarify: when you say you tip when picking up the car, does this require an action from the attendant? (i.e., do they pick the car up for you?). Do you still tip every time if in a self-service garage, where the only interaction you have when taking the car out is drive past the attendant's booth? I tipped them quite nicely last year, partly because once one of them took the trouble to call me in the middle of the night to tell me I left my interior light on (not really sure if that would have been a problem, but still nice of them), but would never occur to me to stop by and tip them almost every day as I drive by.
