The police station would be helpful...also, walk around in the evening.
I live in the building -- the neighborhood is safe (the police station next door helps) and it is usually very quiet at night. During the day the area is busy with all the local businesses, but they clear out by 6 PM or so and it gets quiet. The neighborhood is getting more residential, as there are many new apartment buildings going up in the area along 6th Avenue. It's not the most beautiful block or street to live on, but it is convenient. Let me know if you have any specific questions and I will try and answer them.

I work just down the street. It's not a particularly interesting neighborhood, and there aren't very many good places to eat, but it is gentrifying at huge speed and tons of new apartments in the area, so with them hopefully resources will come in time.
#3 thank you for you input. I really like the apartment in the building. It's pretty spacious. Do you like the building? Are there any issues I should be aware of? I notice most of the window facing east are lot line windows. Any rumors of the building to the east of Cass Gilbert sellling to developers?
Overall I love the building -- the apartments are very spacious -- and they are well laid out, with few common walls with the neighbors so there is almost no noise from other units. The neighbors are generally friendly, the doorman is great, the super is very nice and has helped us with all sorts of minor repairs (luckily we haven't needed any major repairs). I have not heard about the building to the east selling to developers, although it wouldn't surprise me given what is going on throughout the neighborhood. The only real drawback is a lack of services in the immediate area -- but if you don't mind walking a few blocks for basics such as a grocery store, then it's a great area.
What's there to know...it's manhattan...stop thinking and buy the apartment. ENJOY
we have submitted a bid -- hopefully we will win the bid. Thanks for all the advice.
I lived on that block 2 years ago and I must say it was not very much of a neighborhood if that's what you are looking for. No good places to eat, a lot of bad bars and it gets really noisy by 6 AM. Maybe those problems are not problems for you though?
what is the parking situation on the block? How does one get deliveries with all the police cars?
