Who in their right mind would pay $857/sq.ft. for this? Seriously? http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/manhattan/cozy_crazy_couple_makes_tight_studio_R15ToNFTaJE3c17zkw4efP Great opportunity for some creative comments here...
And it's a 16th-floor walkup!
$700 maint on a 175sf apartment -- $4.00 a sf!
this is great!
"Maybe I'll just get Christmas-tree pajamas and wear them around," laughed Zaarath. "That'll be good."
maybe they can also get clothes with furniture on them to give the illusion... no really i love this
Made me think of that townhouse on bedford that touted "Carey Grant" smoked sausages here.
Had that half address like living in John Malkovich's brain. 79 1/2 Bedford?
75.5 Bedford
It's 9 and a half feet wide!

This quote says it all: "If you want to stay home or entertain, this is just not the apartment for you". No problem, they always eat out - the only items in the cupboard are champagne and Drano (makes a wicked Mimosa), and hang out in local parks.. The truly unique feature of this amazing buy - absolutely no room for garbage.
That article was amazing propaganda for my cat adoption group. Those people have two cats and even have a climbing/scratching tree for them. Now I have an excellent comeback for those who say "I would love to adopt but my apartment is too small."
Alan: By your definition this is a 23rd floor walk up: http://www.corcoran.com/property/listing.aspx?Region=NYC&listingid=1558678. I love the views but the bedroom is claustrophobic and the walk up is a bit offputting.
As to the apartment featured in the NY Post, it's perfect if you're a Lilliputian!
OnTheMove, that broker looks villainous, and has a confusingly sinister name to match. And he writes things like "one of the most unique", so he's semi-literate, too.
What a complete rip-off! Are these people insane? Sure, they may be thrilled to 'own real estate in NY in two years' but let's see how happy they are being saddled with this unsalable albatross after ten... And sorry, but more than $700 in maintenance for a glorified maid's room? Seriously??
And don't get me started on the cats...
$700 a maintenance? It should be more like $70. These people are idiots. They should have stayed in NJ.
"These people are idiots. They should have stayed in NJ." Alpie, you shouldn't have made that two separate sentences ... they're parts of the same idea, so you could've used a semicolon or an ellipsis.
Here's the apartment listing: http://streeteasy.com/nyc/sale/404887-coop-535-west-110th-street-morningside-heights-new-york
Probably the worst deal of the year. Wow. $860/sq ft and $4/sq ft maintenance in HARLEM. Why?! How?! Sure, maybe it fits their needs, but MAYBE at $75k -- $50k is more like it.
I wonder if the bathing complex is included in the 175sf.
For that matter, I wonder if the 175sf is exaggerated by the usual percentage!!! That would be exceptionally sad.
If they got rid of the cat scratcher thingy they might have room for a formal dining room.
Anybody notice the only piece of furniture is a mini bar?
To numb the pain of it all ... one little airplane-size bottle at a time.
liz, i don't know, housing two cats along with two humans in such a space may very well be, or lead to, cruelty to animals, cat scratcher thingy or no.
With two cats in that space I'm more worried about the cruelty to the humans. If you had a choice would you store the Cheerios or the pasta with the kitty litter??
it would actually cost LESS to rent than the maintenance -- assuming a generous $50/sq ft comes to $729. Maintenace is $789. They threw away $150k and $60 every month at least. Unreal.
It makes sense ... I mean, they said they like to throw things away immediately. I guess that applies to money, too.
"Maintenace is $789."
HOLY CRAP!!!!
There are people in Washington Heights paying less maintenance on normal human-sized 1400 square foot 2-bedroom/2-bath apartments!
AR cats can adjust fairly easily to small spaces. Before I moved to this apartment, I shared my 315 sq ft (or so) "micro lbr" with three cats who I think missed the total lack of sunshine more than extra room. (I must admit when we moved to a three time larger sun filled apartment you could see the cats chaning their habits in delight. (At another point I had only one cat but I also living there were my girlfriend and her six month old daughter...now that was TIGHT). I have a friend who had four cats in a studio. None of thsse were anything like "cat hoarding" situations. For cats the imperatives are food, water, a warm place to sleep, a clean litter box and loving attention from their person/people. They can find this in relatively small spaces.
I do agree that the two cats in the 175 sq ft is hardly optimal. But in a city where so many cats face slow death on the street or euthansia at the city shelter...if their people love them this is way better fate.
What's odd to me is that the maintenance for a one bedroom in the same building offered at $399,000 is only $659 a month. Why is it $130 higher for the much smaller space?
I knew I remembered reading another article about this apt. I found it!!
http://nymag.com/realestate/vu/2009/09/59211/
The maintenance may cost more since the apt is a PH! HA!
The article that E70 linked states the maintenance as $170, which makes a LOT more sense. However, a comment points out that the print edition has it at $710.
I'm inclined to believe that the older online article has it right, and this week's article has it wrong.
bump for self-indulgence
gomez, because they have the penthouse apt ;)
