Escaping Contracts?

Has anyone had experience escaping a contractor's contract. The contract itself has no contingency for it (it's just a signed proposal), and no work has been started. Is this legal, or more hassle than it's worth?

I left a painter's contract and told him he could keep my deposit. He returned it anyway.
