Discussion about
Anybody know anything about the evolution of how windows cut out noise. Every building seems to say "double-pane" or some such, but in practice there seem to be degrees of effectiveness. I am subletting in Lincoln Towers (cool,,,huh!) for a couple weeks, in a unit that faces the courtyard (but is obliquely open to wea) and the windows are not so great, in my picky view. They are double-p aned. Major hotels anywhere always seem to have some super noise insulating glass.
the point being? ...."you are subletting for a couple weeks" so it's noisy....wtfc.
There's an article in today's RE section about sound attenuation. Not much specifically about windows, though.
romare..I am looking to rent/buy ...Since L Towers is sort of relatively cheap, i was glad to have the opportunity to check it out. Noise is a key issue to me. I've lived in large European cities and got this idea that you can live in a big intereesting city without noise...but it's hard here.
As you head up 70th to Broadway, look at 201 W 70th, about the third or fourth floor facing the courtyard. They've put in interior wooden windows, with mullions. Sort of like Europe where you see inner and outer casement windows.
center of many euro cities is quieter bec of much lower building density than in nyc. DC is kind of euro in that sense. Noise is a reason I wish I was able to afford wvillage (a few streets, not many), and am thinking of wmburg
