Discussion about
Does anyone have any info/update regarding the possibility of Macy's anchoring the purported commercial space to be erected on the corner of 125th Street & Lenox Avenue?

It'll fail just like the Macy's in the Bronx...

I know that the Macy's in the Bronx is still in business and doing well by the looks of it.... and if they can open one-up there why wouldn't it be a possibility in Harlem which is in Manhattan?

If you look at the people shopping in Macys on 34th Street, Macy's in Harlem makes sense.

#6 i would imagine he is saying something to the effect that people at 34th St look like they are on low income.
If so he is an idiot - i know people making good money who have bought in Harlem. I could be wrong though, he could be saying that people shopping at 34th St tend to look like they are on the cutting edge of street culture, as many urban clothing/fashion styles have come out of Harlem and spread globally, and now make people in those industries far more money than #5 will ever see in his life.

Good one #7. I went to the Harlem open house yesterday, and I can vouch that there's plenty of money and style in Harlem. Ignore the haters.

Macy's in the Parkchester section of the bronx has been there 23 years and by the way there is a starbucks on the same block I don't think any of them are going any where.

#8 here responding to #10. Read the posts more carefully next time, and lose the sarcasm while you're at it. I was referring to THE Harlem open house, not A Harlem open house.

I think #1 asked if anyone had any updates regarding the rumor of a new Macy's anchoring the commercial space on Lenox and 125th street....I haven't heard any new information.

I spoke with a developer who is working on this project. Not official yet but seems likely.

Macy's will never come to Harlem...the population and income just doesn't work for Macy's

macy's would work very well in harlem. you have a location that is easily accessible by mass transit (all subways) and buses, plus you have lots of people shopping - 125th is a natural draw for macy's.

if you look at the types of RETAIL that exist on 125th, it tends to be big, brand name stores - H&M, Old Navy, etc. Macy's would do extremely well, given that it could fill the need for housewares, dressware, etc that don't exist on 125th now.

For those of you old enough to remember, Gimbel's, a now-defunct Herald Square-based department store chain, opened a branch at Lex & 86th St. in the 1970s or so -- precisely because it was one express stop from 125th St. It was too downscale for the neighborhood, even for Yorkville, so they weren't relying on local business.

On the other hand, maybe bad business decisions led to Gimbel's demise.

#16 here. I actually called the office of the developer and asked what they were planning to do with that space. He wouldn't go into detail, but he mentioned that they are working on a deal with Macys. He also discussed some other retail and a hotel... Was an interesting call (and he was very friendly and open) but he wouldn't confirm anything yet.

I called him because I just bought on 124th and wanted to see if the rumors about Macys are true.
