Discussion about
Hi, anyone knows anything about Roosevelt Island? prices are nice, it's still quite close to everything, and I guess skyline views are amazing, but what's the downside? (I'm not from NYC, would appreciate well-informed opinions.)
getting stuck on the 100 year old tram. this happened last year.

wow, didn't expect THAT :-) But I expect they fixed it by now..
Besides the sketchy transit options, Roosevelt Island itself has a weird vibe. Not a lot of options for entertainment, dining, services, etc. I don't know why, but it feels sorta like an old Eastern Bloc city to me.
You gotta check it yourself and see if you would be comfortable living there. I wrote it off my after my visit.
That's because Roosevelt Island is a Mitchell Lama Project. It was built for the working class and it should stay for the working class. Otherwise there wont be any place for teachers, firefighters, police officers and other people vital to the city's functioning too live.
#1 here. didn't know that, but I think that's a very good move of a city to designate an attractive area with beautiful views to the working class.

Dead on accurate description. I think they have one dry cleaner.
Regarding the tram, it's not the only means of transportation. There's a subway stop there too.
Is it possible to walk over there? (from Manhattan)or would that be just too much? The island is owned by the state of New York & it does have a little more of a suburban feel due to all the open space & yes, there are wonderful views of the east side of Manhattan. Check it out, you might like it.
I think they only recently began to allow pets on the island which, to me, (assuming it is true) is just the strangest thing.Personally cannot imagine living on an entire island where noone has a pet.
They do now allow pets, at least up to a certain size but now they're having problems with doggie doo all over the island; there are two sides to every story. There is a website for Roosevelt Island; just google it & you should find it.
There are no decent restaurants on the island, there's only one bar, one dry cleaner...
Great views, but the feeling is more "former communist town" than "American suburb".
The prices aren't that low...It's not Manhattan...in fact it's a little strange!
Wow, only one restaurant!

Oh my, like living in Iowa within sight of Manhattan - Bizarro !
The Mitchell Lama laws are set to expire very soon and Trump will be all over the Island rebuilding. In 20 years it could be cool...or not. Who knows?
Mitchell Lama - can somebody explain? I keep thinking Tony Lama, a Hollywood haberdasher.
Can anybody explain? Please, please, I am too lazy to lift my fingers and do a google search. Even if I do find the right information, my reading comprehension is still so poor I need someone to explain it to me anyway. I am such a clueless Manhattan dweller I can only come up with dumb hollywood references with no relevance to real life. Please be fair, Mom and Dad just said they would get me into a school and bribe my way through some over hyped Ivy League education, I, like George Bush didnt think I had to really learn anything. My doorman gets my mail and carries my luggage, can't someone please do a google search for me, pretty please?
F you, 18. :>)
I think its nice on Roosevelt Island but everytime you go anyplace you need to go into the City instead of just being there. I found good info on both www.NewNewYorker.com and www.NYCMOVE.com maybe you can decide which neighborhood works best for you...
