Discussion about
Anyone? I am looking forward to meeting you, NYCMatt.
:)
you both, get a room!
Who can afford a room with these real estate prices? ;)
lol
rent....by the hour!
where? everything's been upgraded. the meatpacking district was once an option. i feel a limerick coming on.
Spk for yourself. P09. I thought it was p10. ... I just need 10 minutes. A savings of 5/6 of your rent. But of course let's not complicate w buy/ rent disc.
how do I transfer my $10 dollars from one handle to a new one?
SUGGESTIONS FOR VENUE?
Cabo?
Pick an open house, the guys come with wine or beer and the ladies come with appetizers.
Now that's an idea. We find the fanciest open house we can that is open for a couple of hours. Heck, of it's fancy enough they should be serving champagne and hors d'oeuvres, right?
Suggestions on specific open house to use?
Brokers/agents, here's your chance for networking! We won't tell your clients you were in on it too. ;)
For the get together in October 2010, we can even arrive in costumes! Yes, October 31st, 2010 is a Sunday!
I was thinking this might be nice if it were summer since we could hang on the rooftop terrace so as not to be bothered by the broker:

If this open house route is taken, a contingency plan for a nearby bar should be made since the host's patience will eventually run out.
The contingency plan can just be another open house... and then another...
inonada, nice pick btw
does anyone know how to list an apt for sale on SE? I signed up as professional but it only lets me list rentals. thanks
"Pro", just put the information about the apartment right here, especially the timing of the open house. ;)
Sunday, here it is. Open house by apt at 212-799-6043

Did this happen?
awesome.
love the open house idea. what about using a townhouse (harlem would be ok?). that way nyc10023 and matt could have their own room.
Admin: I think Matt & I swing in opposite directions.
ok nyc10023, but then... i still like the idea of a townhouse open house as the place for the get together. it's really on topic. and legally, we can stay till the open house is scheduled to close.
remember that we can always move on to the next open house.
Color me old-fashioned, but I think it's rude to use an OH like that even if it is "legal". And no, I'm not a broker.
I'd rather pick a bar with a large seating area on a slow night.
does barbao still have the large bar area that rain had? is it hyper on a wednesday?
"Color me old-fashioned, but I think it's rude to use an OH like that even if it is "legal". And no, I'm not a broker."
i thought that our presence could be like a godsend to a lonely broker. going from oh to oh could be fun too, kind of what "la ruta del bacalao" used to be in spain. but i guess we are too old for that.
I remember reading that open houses actually benefit the brokers/agents more than the owners. They use the open house for networking purposes. They can meet new potential buyers and even sellers in the open houses.
i would be ok to the oh idea if the apace is big
i think the idea is hysterical, but i seriously doubt a broker would want us for more than 10 minutes. there are a couple of brokers i wouldn't mind doing this to, but i think most would be quite unhappy.
ar, if I were a broker, I would want your number and also give you my card.
"Even though open houses may be of only marginal benefit for sellers, they aren't necessarily a total loss for sharp agents. In addition to bringing in buyers for other homes, open houses create opportunities for agents to sign listing agreements with neighbors who stop by to see the open home. Fifty-five percent of the survey respondents agreed with the statement that open houses help them generate new listing contracts."

sunday, sure you would. if i came with one or two people. but 20 or so people showing up and not leaving? how could that be anything other than disruptive if there are other people seriously looking? and how many of us who might show are looking to list an apartment in the near future or have unfilled needs for buyers' brokers?
it's a funny image. might make people think the market's on fire.
I admit I suggested it just for laughs, but it would be quite fun if actually executed!
We'd love to sponsor your drinking!
We're near Union Square, but are willing to do it anywhere...name the hood.
ar, the seller would also benefit since it would make the people seriously looking think the market is on fire as you put it.
"I admit I suggested it just for laughs, but it would be quite fun if actually executed!"
doing a dutch auction for the place would be fun. a fake one, but if done properly, we could help in the price discovery. during the week we could review the places we visited along with the results from the dutch auctions
well HEY now.... SE is stepping up! Love it!
ar, I hope the Pres shows up too. Wouldn't it be fun to give him a live demonstration of my explanation of air quality in different neighborhoods.
sunday, SE just offered to host. damned decent of them, i say.
i'd pay to see your demonstration, though.
admin, that would be fun too, but I don't know if the auction results would be worth more than just laughs. Some of us here are a bit extreme.
Maybe some place young and fun and happening in Long Island City?
hmmm how about the living room at the W union sqaure... or belmont lounge.. just throwin' em out there..
"i think the idea is hysterical, but i seriously doubt a broker would want us for more than 10 minutes. there are a couple of brokers i wouldn't mind doing this to, but i think most would be quite unhappy."
They're unhappy enough when I show up with my tape measure and calculator.
Steel Cage

What do you win, you ask?
Moron of the week
(pass around that sign up sheet)
Glamma: W union square would be great, mid point for a lot of people (uptown, downtown, east, west).
Union Square sounds great. Right near SE office. Maybe combined with a SE "meet and greet open house" to meet the brains see the gears behind this site.
Is SE offering to buy the drinks? If so, a great way to get back my endless insider payments. I would have to get quite toasted to reach equilibrium. I would come to this. Who is organizing. Please jump on this offer. SE can greet and publicly announce their troll policy.
Hey, I thought you guys were all coing out to Williamsburg, home of the $2 PBR.
"Hey, I thought you guys were all coing out to Williamsburg, home of the $2 PBR."
LOLOLOL.
Yeah, good luck with that.
"Yeah, good luck with that."
Believe me - I am thrilled you avoid coming here.
I thought Shaffer City was great. Can we get the back room again?
I'm feeling mildly nostalgic for the East Village. Anyone up for the Scratcher on 5th st? Of course, if Streeteasy's willing to sponsor, I second Glamma's suggestions!
I third it.
I sort of liked Galway Hooker, even though it wasn't very easy to find the SE Room ... but it was a bit too loud for group conversation. I'd rather not do Shaffer City again, though.
I think anything in the Union Square neighborhood is a SUPERB idea.
Fun idea. So, this get together actually took place, in the past?
AlanHart: Great crab-cakes at Shaffer City.
Thrice.
Too bready ... I think they're from Costco.
ah, meow.
union square is a great location. very convenient for many, including our brooklyn friends.
How 'bout Wildwood, the old Park Avalon.....best pulled pork I ever ate.
'kay, how about the bar at W Union Square on a Wednesday night, SE pays. I like this idea. And they have food as well, which we can all pay for individually as there was such confusion the last time (to the detriment of AR).
OOOHH!
I miss the Park Avalon! What a great place that was!
The PERFECT spot:
29 2nd Ave
New York, NY 10003
There's nothing "perfect" about anything east of Fifth.
That's because you don't know the glories of the L train!
I endured the L train enough to last me several lifetimes.
Lofty, Alas 29 2nd Avenue would be a rather disheartening (read f'ing freezing) walk from the L train in Jan-Feb. Its much closer to Houston than 14th.
wonderbra made a ha-ha.
AlanHart: Shaffer himself told me he uses Ritz crackers for breading.
"NYCMatt
OOOHH!
I miss the Park Avalon! What a great place that was!"
I liked Park Avalon too.
The hot trend these days seems to be barbeque. I was there for the Jet game, the ribs and pulled pork are fantastic.
Weird Park Avalon story:
I was having dinner with a date (I don't even remember who it was, at this point, it was so long ago). We were seated on the elevated area, one table away from the railing. There was a couple next to us. I was seated next to the guy, facing my date, who was sitting next to the woman. He and the woman were sitting in the "booth" seat against the wall.
Over the course of our dinners, I noticed the couple didn't do a whole lot of talking, but the woman did moan several times, grabbing her stomach, clenching her teeth. Once she even spilled her drink.
It wasn't until after we left the restaurant that my date, who had full view of her lap, told me that over the course of the entire dinner the woman's date had been ... uh ... *stimulating* her under the table with his toes.
That was the last time I ate at Park Avalon.
Lots of stimulation, going on at (mostly tablecloth) restaurants.
What's the group dynamic, at these get-togethers? Do we check in with an official StreetEasy staffer, and get nametags to wear?
Most of us are friendly, good-natured types. What about the commenters who are at odds with each other?
No punch-ups, I hope!
Should I bring a bodyguard?
Alan or ColumbiaCounty might be there.
That's what I'm talking about,Matt. ColumbiaCo. seems to be in the S.E. doghouse. I've only been checking these discussions out for a few weeks. So far, Alan Hart is amusing. I enjoy his comments.
Alan, will you behave yourself, at this get-together?
all first timers will be required to go through the paddy whack machine.
truth, we've had three get togethers. i've only lost one tooth. all other wounds were superficial and the bruises have long faded.
glamma, operated by west67th, with cc standing in during drink breaks.
hahaha! no one ever knows what i'm talking about when i say that.
for number 5, we should definitely get t-shirts.
If it wasn't a million miles from my skill set I'd say, lets design and print some shirts we could sell at a reasonable price with the money going to Haitian relief. Anyone game??
I know a little place on west 30th.
WEST GARDEN
Great place to meet if you don't mind meeting face down.
Generally, ends well. (is this the paddy whack machine of which you speak?)
I've been out with ColumbiaCounty.
A nicer, brighter guy you will not meet.
i thought paddywhack was a well-known concept. but then i looked it up on the internets. it has a surprising number of definitions (and paddywhack machine is the name of a band, i discovered, which is simply awesome), including some tendon in cows?
i have more than a bit of the irish in me, maybe that's why i know the concept.
from yourdictionary.com.
paddy·whack (-hwak′, -wak′)
noun
1.Brit., Dialectal a rage; temper
2.Informal a beating or spanking
Etymology: orig., an Irishman < Paddy + whack: as in “get one's Irish up”
and falco is correct. cc is an incredibly nice guy. low tolerance on-line for BS, posturing and not giving tips.
We had a nasty game called paddywhack in gym class. I disliked it immensely.
With a million opinions, will a decision ever be made? Could this be one of the longest threads in SE history? It will be interesting to see.
where's cc?
Yes, where is CC. Aboutready, if you are in contact with him, say hi.
Let's have it at Coogan's in Washington Heights.
There.
Done.
We also need to nail down the date/time. How about Weds at 6pm? We're looking at a couple of places nearby.
SE, not to speak for all, but a wednesday at 6pm in the Union Square area sounds great. and thank you!
Can we just say a Wednesday at the bar, W Union Sq.?
10023, i say if someone's paying they get to select the venue.
W Union Sq sounds perfect .......
Coogan's uptown is a nice idea but that's too much of a schlep for too many
So as a separate item (so as not to confuse the SE-hosted situation), our prayers have been answered. This place is doing a Champagne-hosted open house 2-6pm this Sunday:
http://www.436west20th.com
Available for viewing are 3 of 5 floor-thru apartments, each listed for rent at $12500. You can also buy the building for $21M.
Who's game?
inonada,
I sincerely hope they are serving 1996 Krug Clos du Mesnil at those prices...
I believe there's a correlation between a place's over-priced-ness and what they serve, so we might be in luck.
Incidentally, this is the first-ish I've seen in NYC where they are serving Champagne at an OH, particularly rental. Had anyone seen this before? I had relegated the practice to crashing markets to get people in the door. Is this a sign of things to come?
I would actually put money on some bottles of Moet Chandon or Piper Heidsieck if we are talking about real Champagne... though for a couple bucks more they could class it up a bit with a vintage Lanson Gold Label...
I don't think you are going to get more than a cheap prosecco. why would you rent there for 12.5 when for that price you can get a terrace and fabulous view over central park?
Apt23,
You might be right... but then at those prices who exactly are they catering to if they are going to serve some cheap prosecco?
And you do REALLY want open house guests to go home and develop a nasty headache 2 hrs later? Maybe that is why they aren't renting!
How about Brandy's piano bar on the UES.
Perfect for drinking, cat-fighting and, singing!
Did somebody say "Pulled pork"? Count me in, for that!
I believe it was "This Old Man", who started the whole paddywhack thing.("With a knick-knack, paddywhack -- give a dog a bone...")
And, it's nice to hear that ColombiaCo. has his supporters. I was just asking.
A few of us should go and report back ---------
