Reno question - wall panelling, yeah or nay

Discussion about
I have the opportunity of adding back some original oak wall panelling. However, the rest of the space has white painted baseboards (not original). Would it be weird to have stretches of oak panelling (unpainted, refinished) in some rooms and painted baseboards in others.

It'd look great if you could do a whole room. Tough part will be getting all the woodwork -- not just the panelling -- in that room to match. If not, could probably still pull it off.

BTW, see the dining-room picture at http://www.corcoran.com/property/PhotoTour.aspx?Region=NYC&ListingID=1867339, where they ran out of steam refinishing the panelling, so two walls are partially done.

I could do one whole room, but the window frames would be white (not original).

Would the paneling make the rooom(s) feel very dark?

I'm sure that can be finagled. Sounds as if it'd be a real project, but you like those, right?

True, NWT. My partner keeps telling me that I always come up with more projects just as we're "done".

It's not dark panelling - more of that amber color oak.

No.

If you do full floor-to-ceiling paneling, the woodwork needs to be finished in the same wood and stain. Otherwise it looks like you just threw paneling up.

10023, you really need to work on finding the weekend place. nothing like thousands upon thousands of square feet and a few acres to provide endless projects. the gift that keeps on giving.

Matt: It's more wainscotting than panelling - 3.5 feet high.

AR: I've realized that I have so many projects on the go all the time that having a weekend place will kill me. P.S. we have finalized some nice vacation plans this summer (yep, more Europe) - offline.

amazing, even when you aren't insulting someone or something, you manage to conclude your post with a sarcastic negative statement.

10023, probably wise of you, especially with the little ones. my gift is giving a bit much these days. just did the roof, redid the attic (it is an awesome teen hangout now, i must say), and now on to what seems an endless array of projects (exterior painting and the master bath and floors in the master bedroom next).

we have some awesome plans for summer as well. again europe.

anywho, back to the first question. i think widespread panelling is oppressive. i'd much prefer to have it selectively. and if just wainscotting, absolutely fine to have the frames not the same.
