Actually most studies show that BOTH genders cheat at the rate you quote. But women end their marriages much more frequently. Which is worse - getting a little strange on the side, but still spending significant time and money on your children and the wife that bore them, or ditching the father of your children to be with your new bad-boy lover, and having the ex foot the bill?

Rhino: divorce laws vary state-by-state. But, in general, nope, a woman is not entitled to continue to not work outside the home indefinitely. Alimony is not guaranteed, neither is there some kind of formulaic amount that goes to her before the stay-at-home parent is able to find a job, etc. Property divison, in general, in NY, is not 50-50 (AR has the community property state thing go w.r.t. the law degree). In short, the stay-at-home parent is kinda screwed in NY. Some would argue that no-one is compelling anyone to stay at home to mind the children these days. However, the fact remains that the stay-at-home parent is at a disadvantage in a divorce situation and especially if the other party chooses to fight. Also, if there is joint physical custody, child support is reduced by X amount. So, in most cases, the former stay-at-home parent is hardly living the life 'o luxury on CS in the old place. Most people have to sell.

Oh, and inheritances are generally not considered marital property in NY, unless it's been commingled in such a way as to make it clear that it's been shared during the marriage.

I am all about you there Aboutready. I feel like that's uncommon. When there is a clear education that was paid for and a clear career that was foregone as part of the marital division of duties...thats one thing. However, when a woman has no career to speak of, then leaves a man...that man should pay child support. Its not clear to me that woman is entitled to live as well as she did with him....particularly after those children are grown and out.

Rhino, after children are grown and out, there's no more child support. But keep in mind that if a woman (or a man, for that matter) decides to leave the workplace for even a few years to raise a child, the stay-at-home spouse loses a big percentage of earning capability, which compounds over time.

For the last time, most divorced ex-housewives don't get the kind of deal Perelman exes get. His exes had great legal representation, and he had a VERY deep wallet, so whatever settlements they got were in the end, a mere fraction of his wealth.

If there's anyone to feel sorry for in a divorce situation, it would be the kids. Kids of previous & current marriages. Given the nature of child support, it can cause tremendous stress when a parent has to first give X% to the kids from previous marriages first before allocating funds for children of the current marriage. I don't know if it's still true, but I think there is mandatory contribution for college tuition as part of child support. This creates a problem when that has to be paid before the needs of the children of the current marital household. Not easy.

Rhino: we disagree on a few things, but I sense that you would be a mensch if you ever split from your wife, who is a stay-at-home parent.

NYC10023, there certainly wasn't any mandatory college tuition contribution for my father. Mom and I got to pay for it all ourselves. I have a lot of undergrad debt and no grad school debt. My siblings didn't finish to college. One dropped out because he couldn't afford to pay tuition and dad wouldn't kick in any money. This wasn't in New York. If NY has a college tuition requirement, that's just plain great.

Ev: I wish that all high school kids received 1) financial mgmt course teaching basics of budgeting, interest rates, mtges, stocks, etc. 2) basic cooking course incorporating vegetables 3) sex ed course and free supply of birth control 4) 1 year abroad.
